How do you pronounce Leif?

Me and my boyfriend have got into a bit of a debate lmao. I've always called Leif 'leaf' because his name is a pun, whereas my boyfriend has been pronouncing it the more traditional way of 'lay-f'. It didn't even occur to me that it would be anything but 'leaf' and now I'm losing my mind

Although if I didn't already know that prior to encountering the character I would go for "life". I typically fall back on German pronunciation rules if I don't know how to say a word.
