Have you gotten scammed or had a theft?

we really can't wall off areas anymore due to the fact that you can jump off the airport dock into the water.

best we can do is ask them to walk into the front area and close them in with bushes.

Never happened to me yet. After all, can't get scammed if you never trade with anyone.

Not exactly a scam, but there was this one time in New Leaf a person tried to convince me I was part of some creepypasta. It consisted of them not going to my town for an hour after I opened my gates, then when I called them on it they told me someone must be watching us. I wasn't in a great mood that day so I was having none of it, but I wonder what their story would have consisted of.

Thankfully, no. I only trade with people on this website and have so far had only good experiences. However I have opened up my island a few times on turnip exchange so people could get a diy from Celeste and one of my villagers who was crafting a golden seat. I charged an entry fee of 1 NMT and had a few people not pay which was rude, but I didn't care enough to do anything about it (like cut the connection). I also had the whole area blocked in and made sure there was no way for people to go outside the fence.

Woah I didn't realize this yet, good point

One time, I was doing a giveaway on Reddit, and people were coming and going. On the side, I was also doing a diy exchange with some one.

So the diy exchange was happening, and we both dropped our diys. All of a sudden, some one on the island, who is supposed to be here for the giveaway (items/diys/clothes), came over, and wanted to pick up the diys we dropped. I had to push her aside to get my diy.

She also found out that Redd is on my island (before I did), and was trying to buy a real painting, but thankfully I got to it first.

I was almost scammed 3 times when getting Raymond until the 4th time I actually got him.

1st time I was way too oblivious. The person sent me an obviously fake picture of them with Raymond and then when I went they ended right after I dropped the nmt and realized what was happening.

2nd time the person said they had him and I was going to give them a villager in return but they refused to let me get him first. I luckily ended the trade before I got the villager for them.

3rd and most annoying time I went thru the whole amiibo cycle to get Marcie (who I find highly unattractive) for someone to get her and when I invited them over they proceeded to curse me out in French for taking too long and didn't even come to get her so they just wasted an hour of my day and took up my only open plot.

Yeesh at these stories... I can't imagine the mentality of an AC scammer. This is such a sweet and innocent game -- why use it to mess with people?

Luckily I haven't been scammed. I had a couple of close calls in New Leaf, though. I remember someone trying to rob me on an island. I just put my 3DS down and did other things irl, lol. They eventually got bored and left.

I also had someone from these forums randomly show up in my town while I was waiting for someone to pick up the items I held for them. They saw all the stuff on the ground and promptly said, "it's all mine now" (or something along those lines). I immediately disconnected. It turned out they were joking, but I had zero way of knowing that, so it kinda freaked me out. (But also, don't make a joke like that to someone you hardly know...)

I once offered up access on discord for people to come buy a crown from my ables. This person didn't pay the 1 NMT I asked for and when he was finished he tried to run all over my island even though I asked him to stop. He didn't realize it but I placed tiny items all over than would prevent you from leaving past the shopping area. People can be so rude! I pushed him out before he stole anything but thats as close as it got. Now I'm hesitant to offer that service on discord. Here at least we have a feedback/rating system that discourages that kind of thing. I'm happy to say I've never been burned on this forum!

Not so far but I think that's partially because I pretty much only use this website which has a very friendly and overall nice community. Nookazon on the otherhand or Reddit has some rougher crowds.

I never even thought of that!

That's a bummer for those people whose islands are designed to allow them to fence an area off for trading etc.

Yeah, someone stole an item laid out for another person during a purchase. Person 1 was just about to pick up their item, when person 2 arrived. Person 2 grabbed the item meant for Person 1 as we were chatting, and only gave it back when asked by both of us. I assumed it was due to cataloging and although rude, I let it slide. Then Person 1 wanted to go to the shops, so I let them. When keeping an eye on the shops, I noticed Person 2 was afk in the docks after their trade so I kept looking back but trusted they were typing or something.

After a while, Person 2 left without saying anything. I checked near the dock and an item meant for another person (which I had laid out early) was taken! Luckily, it wasn't anything super expensive and we came to a compromise with a new item. But now I know better than to invite multiple randoms and lay out items beforehand.

i've never been scammed before, mostly because i get so paranoid when i do host my island to strangers. I usually block things off and clear items off the ground. there was one time i saw someone pick up random furniture i had laying around, but they wanted to catalog them lol
i haven't played the new summer update yet, but hearing that people can jump off the dock and gain access to other parts on the island is quite scary! i've only experienced quick trades on this forum since players know how to respect each others island. i guess this is a motivation to finally complete my island so i don't have to worry about my random items everywhere haha

Ohh, I hadn't even considered that.

I've never been scammed... I think I've been shortchanged a couple times, but didn't really care. I've done a lot of trading with hardly any issues. I also don't let people wander my island... and I can sense the paranoia when I visit someone else's island and am being watched like a hawk. 😅

The first month or so I was pretty naive about scammers/griefers, that I went to someone's island to speak to Sahara or Celeste, and wanting to be nice, went to their house to plant some flowers I had brought. The owner came running up and ended the session so fast. I think she thought I was stealing or picking petals. Since then I don't wander and try to keep visits as brief as possible.

I have gotten scammed once, not from anyone from TBT or Nookazon, but from a random person on Instagram 🤣 There was a post someone made on an item and I made a reply saying if anyone has these items I would like to purchase them or trade for them. So someone contacted me saying they would like to do a catalog trade. I brought a bunch of items that was on their wishlist in exchange for me to be able to catalog their fortune cookie cart and get a crafted dog house. At the time I did not know the fortune cookie cart was a special item :( so yeah, never got that! Nor did they bother to let me know and they didn't give me a crafted dog house either. The saddest part was, I also gave them 100k because I was thankful they were willing to craft the dog house ;-; so I never got the items, gave them free bells, and they got to catalog my items lol....
Oh, second time something similar happened (although I wouldn't really consider this a scam??) was when I made an offer for a Happy Birthday Cake on Nookazon. The seller handed me a Mom's Cake instead. Feeling confused, I asked them, is this really a birthday cake?? The person insisted it was...so I asked again phrasing it different saying, "Oh, mom's cake is the same as a birthday cake?" Again, they said yeah lol. So either the person really believed that or they were trying to trick me xD I would like to believe they really didn't know so this is my maybe I got scammed experience.
My only other bad experience with someone was when I had let someone on my island for a trade (again from Instagram). After we traded, they asked me if they could go shopping at my stores and I said yes. And during this trade, I did not have my fences up as I usually do for all trades on my island. And lolol, the one time I had no fences up, this happens 😭 Instead of going to my shops, the person started runing around my island going who knows where and I have a bunch of items laying everywhere as I have no more storage room. Being alarmed at them doing the opposite of what they said, I immediately pressed the power button. After two bad expriences from traders on Instagram, I decided never again will I make a trade from there. Then I discovered this forum and now I feel better about trading, selling, and buying from people ^^ yay~~~

That is so messed up!

I wouldn't have found that amusing AT ALL!

How did they see the dodo code in the first place, though?

Yes. Mainly back in NL though.
Probably the most major was someone scammed me in a villager trade. They took my villager and then never opened for me to get theirs. I had some things (hybrids) go missing during some giveaways.

For NH, I haven't had anything blatant but I did do a nook miles item giveaway so I used miles specifically to order things that people signed up for to receive...I did have a person ghost me to receive the item (even though they were actively posting around the forum) so I wasted the miles ordering it ultimately. I won't be doing anymore giveaways like that for that reason.

I've had some trades that had bell exchanges and sometimes the amounts were off but...I don't tend to get fussy for 100k off. If it was more than that then I'd probably think it was intentional but I can see how dropping the bags can be easy to lose track.

Overall I think the community is far more generous than deceptive. For every 1 bad player, I think there's 10 more willing to be helpful or kind.

I trade a lot here and on Reddit and I’m glad to say I have never had any bad experience. Even with new members (I’ve traded with people who have zero feedback). I try not to judge so much on feedback because I get that we all start as new. I trade almost daily and I’m fortunate enough not to have been scammed or or had any bad experience.

I joined this website specifically to sell Marshal, and so my first post was offering him for sale!

I didn't realise how important feedback and reputation might be, but I guess I might have had a few people completely disregard my post based on that alone, which is fair enough.

Thankfully someone took a chance on me and even guided me through the whole process, insisting that they give me the NMTs and bells before I took them to meet Marshal, as I was unsure of the usual routine.

That's pretty much set the tone for all my trading on here since.

I didn't even think about that... uhhhhh... no bueno.

I haven't been scammed yet, but I also really only use this site or I trade with trusted people out of this site. I've seen too many call-out posts on twitter about scammers who do fake giveaways, destroy islands and steal. I'm so skeptical of anyone I trade with outside of here that I screenshot all DM exchanges.

I did have an event on turnip.exchange where someone picked up DIYs and materials I had laying around. Nothing on here. My own fault though, learned my lesson not to do that. Nothing too serious taken.

I've had a couple fruit thieves before, but thankfully they got banned from here :)
