here its just the usual restaurant/ beer / Cuervo specials. my favorite Mexican food is- tamales, maybe i can get some later....

do they have a parade or anything where you live?

I actually know what this holiday is all about.

Back in the 1860's, France tried to invade Mexico. On this day in 1862, the state of Puebla won a battle against France, thus ending all European interference with the western continents.

People thought it was Mexican independence day, but that's actually September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is rather a celebration of a Mexican victory against France.

we just had a small little food party in my school. someone brought in tacos and tamales and horchata (rice drink, very sweet)
had some really good rice too, and these potatoes were amazing but im not sure what they were

Even as a person who never went to Mexico, I know more about Mexico than an average American does, which was why I knew when you guys celebrate Independence Day and what May 5th was actually about.

Coincidentially, I joined TBT one week before Mexican Independence Day (at Central Time that is).

i do think most people in the USA vaguely know the true background at this point, and also know who to thank for it being a big holiday here (the Jose Cuervo Compania... :p)

well it didnt quite end all interference at that point, as the French lost that battle but later won the war and installed a European Emperor of Mexico. (who was in turn eventually overthrown....)

but in any event, viva Mexico!
(except in soccer)

tbh where i'm located, people dont celebrate cinco de mayo until night, and honestly I'm surprised I don't hear any mariachi or anything. Maybe last year had too many noise complaints. I don't really drink and I'm very tired because i got up to watch a movie super early so sadly no celebrations here. But like, viva la M?xico.

Don't Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

*waits for liberal tears*

I ate the leftovers of my Mexican food, it was really good. And then I slept, and now I'm working. Just a normal day, although the holiday brought in a lot of business!
