So far I've used close 100 bait to try to get the golden trout to spawn and no luck. I feel like I'm going crazy trying to get this darn fish! And yes, I am looking in the clifftop for this trout.

Anyone else having trouble finding any particular fish/bug? Post your rants and woes.

I used 60 fish bait to try and catch a tuna last night and instead got 3 oarfish, it would be so much better if the RNG with fishing gave you fish you don't have as a higher chance

Friendly reminder that the Golden Trout will spawn in rivers and ponds on both levels of cliffs, not only on the highest one.

As for me, I've been trying to find the near mythical Barreleye with no success. I could feed a country with all the horse mackerels I've been caughting on my search for the Barreleye.

Now I have to get the Tuna, another fish famous for being ridiculously hard to find.

Even the Coelacanth is easy to find, as I've caught 3 on the same day.

I am at 250 bait and counting trying to catch a Golden Trout... I try with 50 a night and this is night # 5. Struck out again..

I got lucky then because I caught a tuna off my pier a day or two ago since I think they were coming close to end of season. I got the tuna sometime within the first 10 bait I made.

The barreleye was actually one of my first catches. I got it before the museum fully expanded. Granted I haven't really been ocean fishing since I'm trout hunting, but I haven't seen another one since. Also got pretty lucky with the tuna too. I guess sometimes you get luckier with some fish than others.

Are the spawn rates different for every island? I caught 5 golden trout in the 1-2 hours I was grinding for a stringfish and I still haven't managed to catch a stringfish. I also caught a couple tunas but failed to catch a blue marlin in my own island. I went to a friend's island who I knew had caught a blue marlin and I was able to catch one in about 15 minutes using a couple bait.

It's because the spawn rates got nerfed in the update. I used to have a sturgeon island... used to... But to be fair, catching golden trouts was hard even before the update.

Fish were untouched. They were not nerfed. Only select insects received adjustments.

Everything points to that conclusion. I saw some videos with people comparing spawn rates for fish and the difference is stunning.

So I don't think there's any data to back this up, but there is some speculation that supports this. I got desperate and watched a youtube tutorial on how to catch golden trout because I was and still am having no luck. But someone had the same problem as me, used over 250 bait to get this fish and no luck. However he got a good amount of string fish. His friend was having the opposite problem, he'd get trout and no string fish.
I got lucky and just happened on a stringfish in my river. They're out of season now though so I can't really test that theory, but I know my boyfriend had trouble getting stringfish in his town too.

I don’t know if it’s me, but I’m trying to get the nibblefish and the rainbow fish, I used 30 or more bait in the river and it didn’t show up earlier in the afternoon, Does anyone know the chances of these 2 fish and the angelfish?

Are sturgeons even still in season? I know they aren't year round. I'm wondering if chances of catching certain fish also rise and fall during certain seasons.

It’s not in season for northern hemisphere, not sure for southern.

Ooh yeah I have a couple friends who have similar experiences. Although other friends can catch all fish fine and without using crazy amount of bait too! So I'm really confused. I don't mind flying to a friend's island to catch fish but if spawn rates are truly like this on certain islands then it really sucks for those who don't have online services :(

Has anyone maybe tried doing a nook island tour to try and maybe get different spawn rates from their island? Is that any better or worse?

I have a little exploit for catching fish. It's an exploit because it involves save scumming. Here's how I get rare fish...

Before everything else, make sure you have at least 10 baits with you. And make sure to move real fast since you are avoiding the auto-save. Make sure your fishing rod can be easily equipped. It's also better if the water is near your house. So if you can terraform to have a pond/river near you, might as well do that first, for your convenience. Once you're prepared, you can start.

  1. Save & restart the game.
  2. One the game loads, quickly run towards the river/pond/beach/pier.
  3. Throw bait until you see the desired shadow. Then fish. Attempt only 2-4 times.
  4. If you didn't catch the desired fish after a few attempts. Quit the game without saving, then repeat step 2-4.

You cannot really do this long enough because the auto-save will keep the amount of baits you have left. So if you quit before it saves, you keep the amount of baits and just try again.

So again, this only works if you are not caught by the auto-save.

Angelfish aren't rare. Angelfish, Betta, Goldfish and the Neon Tetra are uncommon riverfish/pondfish.

Now, the ranchu goldfish and the popeyed goldfish are harder to come by.

They were available on southern islands until April 30. I don't know for certain if they still are around, have to check my app. But I did catch one on April 30.
