Do you think we will ever be able to rename our islands?

I feel like this would never happen, but it would be nice if Nintendo would add this feature. I don’t like what I named my island anymore, but I don’t want to reset because I’ve come so far.

This would definitely be nice to have. I feel the same way about my island name (should have picked something that was more thematically neutral, but I guess that's on me XD). It shouldn't be hard to implement, especially since island names aren't unique. Ah well.

I personally don't need this feature but I can see why you would want to do that sometimes, a name can definitely get old after a few months. Being able to walk up to Isabelle, then call for a new island name vote would be pretty cool...

It might become confusing if people on your friend list change their island names around a lot though, and it would also cause some inconsistencies for small things like messages you left on the message board. Still, I don't see why you would force people to stick with the name they picked when they first launched the game.

I would like the ability, as I might like to change it since I've seen at least one other person on the forum with the same island name and I have to imagine there are others out there too, so it would be good to switch it to something original. I do still like what I went with so I'm fine living with it, but if the option was there? Heck yeah I'd take it.

As others have said though, it's unfortunately not going to happen.

I agree with your and most people's feeling here that Nintendo will probably never let people do that. It would be really nice though, because I came up with a new idea and theme for my island and while my Island name kind of works for it, it would be so much clearer and nicer if I could change the name to something that totally fits.

I've also heard that the character limit has been updated, so that you can have island names that have a few more letters than the amount you could have at the launch of the game? I haven't really looked into this because I don't plan on resetting so it isn't relevant for me, but if this is true I feel sad for people who really wanted a longer name but now don't have it because they started playing the game when it came out.

i honestly think they should make an exception for a one time name change. The game was release during the height of the pandemic and a lot of island names reflect that. so....

Not that I would plan on changing mine anytime soon, I still like Woodland. But it'd be neat to have the option.

I'd be more interested in being able to rename our characters. I am in the process of deleting and remaking a few of my side ones so they can have different names.

I think it would be a nice addition! I personally don't feel like I'd ever really need to change mine since it's generic but I know a lot of people who would! Maybe a nook mile redemption for a one-time name change or something! I also think being able to change your in game name would be a popular thing too! I have a common name so I'd change it to a nickname for sure!

I quite like my name, but there are other names I wouldn't mind having as well (Omashu, Fyre Peak, Slightstream, etc.) I don't think Nintendo would implement it, I just really want them to implement moving the plaza!

I would like that if they did! I don’t really know why it’s so permanent. Naming your island is so stressful to me and honestly I’m glad I wasn’t the one to name our island - my boyfriend did.
but it would be nice to have the option to change it without having to start all over.

I doubt it. But I was wondering what happens for reported islands with town names or player names since more posts have emerged about town reports/suspensions. Do the towns with inappropriate names get a prompt to change the name after report or does their town get removed entirely and have to restart? Or does the town remain and they're just banned from online? That sucks though I guess with an inappropriate name it's part of the risk they take.

They never allowed name changes in New Leaf, so I don't think they'll ever allow it in New Horizons.

I was immediately unhappy with the name I chose for my island, but it took so long to find an island with all the features that I wanted that I didn't want to start over. I'd happily pay to change my island name. It should be as easy as changing your town tune.

It would be nice. I could see it happening but that's probably just wishful thinking on my part. They could charge a ton of IGB if they wanted to make sure people weren't changing their island name like every week. Like.. 25 million for an island name change

Edit: but on the other hand.. it might happen if they make it a microtransaction feature, and charge real money for island name changes
