I currently have both Graham AND Rodney. And since they are both smug hamsters, there will be a lot of repetitiveness that is going to be hard to justify... But at the same time, I love and adore both hamsters for their own unique reasons. They make me happy, so that should be enough to justify it, right?

...No.

I still feel bad about it and I'm afraid I'm going to do something impulsive, like yeet one of them at the drop of the hat. I almost did yesterday!
I had heckin' STITCHES in my campsite.

What do you guys think? Is it a bad thing to have two or more villagers of the same species and personality, or is it all relative? If the latter, please help me justify this insanity. Thank you.

I have both Ruby & Dotty who are peppy rabbits. I see them as completely different individuals which is surprising cause the dialogue is limited.

Nan & Chevre are another example of the same species and personality but are a perfect pair.

I have Rosie and Felicity. Surprisingly, both have a few variations with their dialog. It has likely to do with their hobbies maybe.

I try to limit the personalities; I had three peppies at one point and got tired of the peppy dialogue pretty quick. But aside from that, for me, the more cats, the better - though I have quite a few favorites that aren’t cats so my town won’t be all cats. Right now, I have six cats :) and am looking to get at least one more (Ankha since I need a snooty and she’s one of my favorites).

I have Whitney and Vivian but they are pretty easy to tell apart, especially since Vivian's voice is pitched lower and they're two different subtypes

Yes. Chief and Wolfgang. I would have all the cranky wolves if I could, I love them so much...

I have 2 deers and 2 wolves but they aren't of the same personality though, I think it'll bother me to have 2 villagers of the same species & personality tbh, but it's definitely not bad, if you really like them individually then I think that's a good enough reason to have them despite the repetitiveness... I care more for personality trait than species as I want all villager personality type to be on my island, I am in a dilemma tho as I don't have a jock yet despite having a 10/10 dreamie in my island, Judy's fault for showing herself in an island, now I have to weigh whether I'm fine with not having a jock or kicking out either Judy or Diana for a jock villager (probably Genji)...

I have Tabby and Merry on the same island and I don't notice a lot of repeated dialogue.I think it helps that they look very different from each other and they live on opposite ends of the island so they don't interact all that much.

Oof, you're lucky! I've had Rodney for only a little while and he's already repeated much of what Graham says. They have different hobbies, too, which Rodney's being music and Graham's being education.

Really? I thought villager voices only differed by personality... Anyone else experience this?

Aww, that's sweet! But as far as Genji is considered, I'd only recommend making room for him if 1) You really vibe with him/need another personality, or 2) You don't have his special reaction yet (Flourish).

I have Goldie & Daisy, both normal pups. They do have some variation in dialogue and activities since Goldie has the nature hobby and Daisy has education. I didn’t even separate them... I put their houses right next to each other haha

I also have Bones (lazy pup) so I have 3 of the same species but I wouldn’t give them up ):

I have both Maddie and Cookie (trying to get rid of the latter) and I don’t feel too bad about it. I just want to get rid of Cookie because I want Hazel.

I don't really have the exact issue you're speaking of, but my island does have some unintentional species overlap. I have two bears (technically Klaus the Bear and Pekoe the Cub, but come on), two Cats (Ankha and Kabuki), and two Frogs (Diva and Ribbot). Considering there are so many species available, it does kind of bug me that this happened, but they're some of the best to fit my island's theme so it just sort of developed this way.

When deciding on which villagers to have living in a town or on the island in Animal Crossing games, ever since New Leaf I've been in the habit of deciding on a theme to base everything around. My main town in New Leaf is a horror town, and then I went on to create an all-bird species town (Bird, Chicken, Duck, Eagle, Ostrich, Penguin) and a hybrid circus and magic show-themed town. In New Horizons, my initial non-plan was to just choose tropical villagers, but then I decided on a world history and cultures theme.

What primarily matters to me is the aesthetics. For some examples, Lucky fit my horror-themed New Leaf town since he's a mummy, Marcel fit my circus/magic show town because he resembles a clown (I know he's a mime, but Pietro was already in my horror town because some people have clown phobias, plus the IT reference), and Vic fit my world history and culture New Horizons island because he's based on a viking. Personality is a secondary concern, it's less important to me but is not wholly insignificant. To go into more detail with another example, I have Diva as my Sisterly on my New Horizons island because none of the other Sisterly villagers fit my theme and I've been grappling with whether to keep her and have two frogs (as Ribbot is my Jock) or to get rid of her and have three Cranky villagers (Vic and Kabuki are my current two, and if I got rid of Diva then I'd move Dobie in her place because his house makes me think of a historian). It can be sort of a balancing act at times.

I used to have both Beau and Erik who are both deers that have the lazy personality. While Erik was around, I had placed his house a few steps away from Beau since I thought they’d fit the woodsy theme going on the area where I placed their houses.
I was able to stomach having them both for a couple of weeks, but after hearing them repetitively having the same dialogue (they love bugs lol), I had no objection when Erik asked to leave because they were just too similar. ;;

I was very strict on that at the beginning but now I realized that you can fall in love easily with villagers in this game and it's not always go well with your initial plans lol.
It's still important to me to have at least one villager of each personality but I'm more tolerant concerning repeated species. I actually have 3 cats on my island... and I want Tabby too 😬

I care about the personality a lot more than the species. I had two lazies in the beginning and that drove me crazy.

You can see their voice pitch in the spreadsheet going around of datamined villager info (Low, Normal, High). Vivian is low and Ankha and Whitney, my other snooties, are normal. You can definitely tell just by listening though

@Chungus

Each personality also have two subtypes. There's a sub personality doc somewhere but I don't have it handy.
