I actually like the idea that the stuff you give to your villagers carries over to someone else's island outside of their dialogue mentioning their former residents and island (and also provided they don't have inappropriate custom designs). It feels genuine where they came from and didn't simply pop up out of nowhere.
I let them do what they want, but I do wish they wouldn't ask me for bugs and fish. I just can't say no. I would rather not see them all over their houses. Thankfully, they don't display fossils anymore.
Re. bug and fish requests: I NEVER accept them from my villagers anymore.
The only exception is Chief. His house is already a dump and I love seeing his ridiculous collection of cages/fish tanks when I visit I must have given him more than 30 by now and he likes to change the displays around.
In the beginning I didn't care, but their homes end up in such a huge mess I've kicked out my permas and reinvited them because of that. Now I'm really strict about their homes. I only give them 1-2 tops (more than that and they have a chance to display it, no accessories cuz they love to never wear them and just throw them on display) and I don't accept requests, them buying stuff off me, and deliveries. I really wish there was a way to just completely reset their homes and wardrobe at any time then I wouldn't have to say no to them so much.
I don't mind if my villagers have some stuff in their houses and I love gifting clothes to them. I guess it gives them a little personal touch.
Plus fun fact. If a villager asks you to catch them a certain fish or a bug they won't display it in their houses. I did a lot of those favors and only two of my villagers have fish/bugs on a display because they bought it from me.
i honestly just let my villagers do whatever they want - i like to think of villagers as their own individual and so, i’d feel weird trying to control what they wear or what their house looks like - i have plenty of things to decorate and design and so i don’t need to decorate them, too ;u;
that being said, i will attempt to keep a villager as original as possible if i don’t plan on keeping them, as i know originality is important to some. but even then, i won’t be constantly refereeing them or driving myself insane trying to swap something out if they wind up with new clothing or furniture - i won’t give them anything but if they manage to get something by themselves, i won’t be too concerned with that, if that makes sense ;u;
I enjoy giving presents to my islanders, so most of them get clothes and furniture in addition to fruit. But if I feel that my gift won't improve the resident's wardrobe or interior, then I don't. Claude has received the most number of gifts from me because he's one of my first 5 islanders and I wanted to improve his interior. He also gets lots of clothes and hats because he seems to enjoy them so much. At the other end of the scale, Dom gets only fruit from me. I find it difficult to dress a sheep. (Yep. Went to Harv's. Tried everything. And everything gets distorted on a sheep's body. )
Hobbies count too. I give Wolfgang books, magazines, etc because he loves to read. Rolf gets sporty tops because he's a fitness fanatic.
i don't mind, but if i'm gifting them furniture i'd rather give them something that looks good in their house. and i rarely gift clothes unless it's to a villager i dislike and i know i want them to leave in the future.
i let my villagers do whatever they want on my island, i gift them things i think they'd like or clothes that would suit them, etc. I think that part of the game is one of the most enjoyable to me tbh, back in WW i remember carrying clothes in my inventory and talking to my villagers repeatedly trying to get them to ask for it :'3 this obviously makes things so much easier, it's perfect!
that being said... i absolutely want a villager to be original when they arrive on my island, so I can give them everything i want .w.
I give some of my villagers clothing but most I like in their original state, not for selling reasons but purely because I think it looks nicer. I give them stuff like wreaths though. Catchphrases don't particularly worry me as long as they aren't bad. Animal crossing (imo for me personally anyway) is a highly aesthetic game, it's about having cute villagers you love with a pretty island so I see nothing wrong with some people preferring to have original villagers. If I am buying a villager from another user then they must be original because I may not have the same taste as them and I think it's more special to give stuff to villagers uniquely from you rather than someone else. Ofc there is no wrong opinion on this but I think it should be acceptable for people to prefer original villagers. It's a game with a heavily aesthetic focus (especially in NH) and therefore aesthetic preference should be allowed for.
I don't mind, if they do display something and it looks really bad i gift them stuff that will till they change it. the only gifting i have a problem with is the previous owner gifted Julian a custom design jacket that looks terrible, but i hear villagers luv those kind of clothes more than anything else so don't think i can get him to stop wearing it
I'm all over the place on this. Some villagers I treat very carefully because I'm afraid to ruin the interior of their homes. Others, I don't mind as long as things 'match'. I think that'd even go for getting new villagers: As long as whatever is unoriginal about them meets my standards of 'not ugly', I'd take them ;-).
There's a few things I avoid because they tend to avoid villager houses or wardrobes: I decline requests to deliver gifts from 1 villager to another, requests to buy random stuff from me and requests to catch them a fish/bug. I'm also not too happy that villagers can put clothing items on display, and I won't gift some villagers clothing to avoid the risk of them ending up displaying them in their houses. Especially Hopper's house feels kinda ruined because of this for me.
I figured out I needed to avoid the gift-delivery the hard way: Baabara ended up being let go for continually wearing a yellow mariachi suit, Kidd was wearing some weird fishing vest. Carrie needs replacing because she keeps wearing this weird purple poncho thing. Anonio's house now has a low seat that doesn't match his blue wooden furniture. I was kinda slow on the uptake.
But for the most part, I also like the partial challenge that comes with 'fixing' these villagers again. For example, in Kidd's case I just flooded him with career jackets as a gift to avoid him wearing the fishing vest, and he now has two career jackets on display in his house. But they're on either side of the fireplace, so it's 'fixed'. I'm planning on trying to see if I can get Antonio to replace the low seat with something similar that matches the current furniture.
My most unoriginal villager is Hornsby: He moved into one of the three 'starter' houses you built using the kits you get from Tom Nook. And to be honest, that interior looks far more cozy (it's mostly wild log furniture) than his 'original' cardboard interior, so I'm keeping him. I've also gifted him several sweaters that look cute on him. Right now, I'm looking for something nice to replace the butterfly he keeps on display.
It 100% depends on the villager for me. I do try to match their theme if they have a specific theme or if I am trying to get their house looking a certain way. But some villagers, I have chosen to not care because I want their picture so I can let them move out.
Taking them off to Harvs island is my favourite thing to do with a new villager am pretty hooked on dressing them. It annoys me when they get gifted rubbish clothes lol! House wise I am a bit more conservative after my originals ended up with full inventory’s which wiped the original stuff
I don't really care that much. I let my villagers do what they want to do! Of course, I prefer them to wear nice things, but if they don't that's all good!
