Do villagers appearances really matter to you?

I care about how my villagers look but not whether or not they are cute. What I care about is if they match the theme of my island. I have a color themed island and I want all my villagers to match the theme so they are all orange, I also gave my villager orange hair so wee are all on brand lol

That makes me sad to read that about Cyrano. I'm glad you took him in. I had recently found out about him from a friend who has a few anteaters on her island, who also loves anteaters. I wonder just how popular anteaters are now since you also like them.
How ironic... Olaf moved in from my void because my sister did no research on the game and somehow didn't know that plots get sold after 24 hours. Now she's mad at me, even though it was entirely her fault 😂

The fact that you've grown to like Cyrano and Olaf makes me happy. I wouldn't say they're cute, but for anteaters, I do like them. Especially Olaf, because he and I have the same birthday. I think people should give "ugly" villagers a chance. I wasn't really fond of Al the gorilla at first. But he ended up being one of my favorites. Beardo isn't all that appealing to look at, but my best friend wants him because of how he looks. I guess that's still judging a character based on how they look like your sister thinks of Zell and only wanting cute villagers. But sometimes certain villagers fit whatever you're going for. Back in New Leaf I wanted Limberg in my town. Mice villagers aren't appealing to most, and Limberg, well, he's at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to looks. But I didn't care. He was a villager I intended to have, even though it never happened.

People think differently, though. It's nice to have popular villagers or even cute villagers. I find an island a tad more charming when I see a villager I've never seen. Also, quite recently I wanted Biff or Rudy when Mott moved out because I needed a jock. I really thought about getting Rudy because I just think he's really cute, but I went with Biff for nostalgic reasons. Most people wouldn't think so, but I also think Biff is a cute villager. 😊
Even worse... another update: She says she likes him because he told her her outfit looked nice, and she says that she just needs to give him some "cute femboy clothes" and then he'll fit right in. Fml - this is the result of a 12 y/o addicted to TikTok - fetishizing femboys? Jeez... I dunno if this even counts as fetishizing but... yikes.

The appearance/design of the characters does matter to me (I admit that I am very picky) though I’m trying to have a more open mind about them all, except maybe for the ones I didn’t have a good experience with when I had them in NL or NH. I initially didn’t like how the goat villagers look, though now Sherb is one of my favorites. I also didn’t ever care about Tex but once I found out the Tex I got came from a friend’s void, I decided to give him a chance and actually came to like him; I still let him move but at least with no hard feelings. Seeing screenshots and reading threads about people’s experiences with other villagers has made me interested in cycling some different villagers before settling for the last two or three favorites of mine, and giving them a chance. I regret using three amiibo cards early on since they do take away not only the frustration of getting a villager I don’t want but also the fun getting to know villagers that I normally wouldn’t invite. For example, I’ve become interested in particular Hazel, Cole (been interested in since HHD), Agnes (in spite not liking pig villagers), Bonbon - to name a few. Personality used to be a big turn off for me as well (jocks, smugs and snooty) but I grew to tolerate/like all of them, one later than the other two (jock).

Honestly appearance is the most important factor for me. Each villager that’s part of the same personality seems to say the same things, so they are all essentially the same aside from looks anyway. Like if I were to close my eyes and listen to dialogue from 10 different snooty villagers I likely wouldn’t actually have any clue how many different villagers I had heard from since they all say the same things (aside from default catch phrases.) I mean each personality type has enough dialogue that you may not hear the same exact things back to back if you have multiples of a single personality, but all their phrases are in the rotation it seems, and at least in my case I will literally see the exact same dialogue when speaking to my two lazies for example.

Everyones opinions on what counts as a cute or decent looking villager will differ, so I’ve sure I’ve decided I like how a certain villager looks while someone else might think they are ugly or plain or whatever, but I do choose based on looks. Also in my case I don’t think there are actually too many villager that I find so unappealing that I’d be actively annoyed about getting them as a random move in, so there’s that. All villagers are appealing in their own way I think.

People have different reasons for liking villagers. For some it may be their personality, for some it's the species they are, and for some it may be their looks (some people like more interesting looking villagers and some like the more aesthetically pleasing villagers.) It's not really in anyone's place to dictate what they like in a villager or what may draw them to a villager tbh. I personally find Barold quite cute but I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong in the way of your thinking because everyone has different opinions and they're allowed to have whoever they'd like in their town.

a little bit, i guess. there's certain villagers that are an automatic no to me, like kangaroos because they oddly set off a phobia of mine. but i think i like as many "weird/ugly" villagers as i do '"cute ones". rizzo and raddle are some of my top faves alongside popular ones like raymond and cheri.

kind of. i’m definitely more drawn to ‘cuter’ villagers and so, a lot of my dream villagers aren’t ones that are typically considered ugly. i also try my hardest not to leave a plot open for too long as i don’t like taking the chance of some random villager moving in opposed to one i chose.

that being said, i do like villagers that are considered ugly (katt and iggly being the first to come to mind) and so a villager’s appearance isn’t the only thing i take into consideration; it mainly comes down to whether i want that personality on my island and is it someone i wouldn’t mind seeing everyday for a month or so.

long story short, while appearance does matter to me a bit, it mainly kind of boils down to my personal feelings and any past experiences with a villager that’ll determine whether i want them or not aha

Looks matter. I appreciate how this game looks every day. So I do want villagers I enjoy looking at. Most animals look fine to me. There's no particular species or personality type I will reject outright. When I go island-hopping to find a future resident, I usually find one I want to invite within 12-15 tickets.

Sometimes, I like it when the look of an animal seemingly clashes with his personality. For instance, I like pint-sized jock villagers, such as Jitters and Scoot. There's something really adorable about how small they look, and yet how determined they are to be super athletes.

part of the looks matter team. personality isn't a factor here since dialogue types are already locked in. if i think a smug look....less appealing and pass on them, i wouldn't think twice about "oh what if their specific personality is lovable?" all smugs have a set dialogue and i'd rather invite the one i think looks cute back to my island lol.

since at the end of the day, i am the one who's gonna spend time looking at all of these villagers so best move is to be unapologetic and go with what attracts me most.

i mean zell is handsome af. i can't blame your sister.

i have my own preferences. what could be cute for me might not be attractive to others. i feel like i don't like most "cute" villagers anyway, i find them boring or repetitive-but don't get me wrong....not because they are popular but just because some doesn't appeal to me. and that's probably how some of the villagers i like look to other people.

i'd be lying if i say appearances don't matter though. i do design my island and it would lowkey bother me if i have a villager or a villager house that looks so out of place on a certain area. but i'm not really opposed to trying new villagers. it's just that, they won't be on my island forever.

The appearance is the only thing that matters, it's the biggest, and only thing that separates them from others in their personality group.
Sure they got small differences like birthday favourite colour, and catchphrases etc, but who cares.

appearance is very important to me, especially since I play the game mostly for collecting and hunting. so most of my interactions with my villagers is seeing what they are doing as I pass by them on my latest task. changed a bit when i found out about the framed photo gifts, now I do gift them all everyday but after that unless they signal me I don't talk to them.

Considering the fact that villagers from the same personality basically have the same dialogue, I do care about appearance. This is all subject to my preferences of course - sometimes it aligns with popular opinion (e.g. Marshal, Dom, Judy), other times not so much (e.g. Raddle, Graham)

I care about looks, but each one of us has different opinions about what constitutes "cute", "weird", "ugly", etc. It's perfectly fine and normal for all of us to have different opinions with respect to villager appearances, as long as everyone is being respectful and mindful of said different opinions. I have also found that a lot of villager designs have grown on me (e.g. Pango, Graham).

Other than hobbies, there isn't much else to differentiate between villagers belonging to the same personality type.

For me, I like villagers based on circumstances of how I met them originally mixed with design a little bit and then as they live on my island if they can remain interesting. I may be intrigued by one's design which means I should invite them to my island, but doesn't mean they will work out. Tangy is my favorite because she was the first villager to move in outside the original 6 of my first gamecube town, I thought it was a cute mechanic, she was largely in the same position as me moving to a new town, and she was a bubbly orange headed cat which I thought was ridiculous in the best way hahaha.

My most recent upgrade to dreamy status was Jambette actually lol. I always thought she was snooty... and thought that would be terrible and annoying. But then I saw her talking to someone and being so sweet, kind, and reserved, with her looks I was like that's hilarious and not what I would expect. Now she is never allowed to leave my island.

I have never looked at a villager and been like "I love this villager and he/she is my dreamy forever." I think its problematic to think that way too because then you really don't give a chance to some of the other villagers. For me, if I have to spend numerous amounts of nook mile tickets or bells or time, searching for a villager because he/she is popular then its kinda not worth it, just for some dumb clout. But alas, there's people who sheep Raymond because they can put him in a maid outfit.

honestly, it depends on which AC game we're referring to. Obviously this is New Horizons, and I feel like in New Horizons appearance matters more than in, say, Wild World. Not just because of the higher quality graphics in NH compared to WW, but also the personalities are watered down, to the point that it feels like aesthetics are all that's left.
For example: in Wild World, some of my favorite villagers were ones like Angus, Camofrog, Apollo, or Kabuki. You know, cranky ones. And that's because of a few experiences I had where I actually got to know the crankies and they became friends. But I passed up 3 crankies when looking for a new villager once- including Apollo- because cranky villagers are hardly deserving of that name. The personalities of villagers have shifted over time.
I saw a video by TamashiiHikora about the change in villager personalities. It's 58 minutes long, called "The Evolution of Villagers in Animal Crossing", and explains better what I'm getting at.
In past games I wouldn't have wanted a snooty or jock villager much because I didn't click with the personalities. Now it's like... who cares. They're so watered-down it doesn't really matter.
tl;dr: aesthetic matters more now because the personalities have become so bland it feels appearance is all that's left.

Eh I never had a problem with "ugly" villagers when I was younger. And, I don't really now, either. I just jump on the hate bandwagon for these villagers sometimes because it's funny. Of course, I'd never jump on a hate bandwagon if it was to a real person, but villagers are not.

I do care about looks when it comes to villagers. I love cute things, so it seems natural that I only go after villagers I find to be really cute. Sometimes I feel bad about this, but it's just a game. I dont judge actual people the same way I judge whether or not I want a particular villager on my island.

While I think it's a good lesson for a child to learn, I think most of us on the forum are a little beyond that life lesson and can just have fun with it, whether you like cute, weird, or even just having a single species.(Theres a thread where people voted which age group they're in, and we are overwhelmingly adults)

i do. i pick villagers that match my taste and are aesthetically pleasing to my eye. whether or not other people like the said villager doesn't matter to me. everyone has their own preferences and that's okay.
