Sort of. I tend to stay away from high tier-villagers because I'd rather have a unique town. Also, most of my favorites are bottom tier.

It affects me getting my dreamies, because I can rarely get a tier 1/2 without paying millions for it, and tier 4/5 are often auto-voided before I can ask for them/ people just let them move out
However I don't chose my dreamies based off tier!

The only Tier 1s I have are Lolly and Ankha. Lolly was a starting villager, and I wanted Ankha before I even came here and learned about the tiers. My all-time favorite villager is Knox though, who's never not been Tier 5 from what I know.

So no, I just pick based on what I personally find appealing, rather than what's popular.

Personally I really dislike the tier system. So some villagers are more popular than others because they're cute? I feel like, as it's been said before, having tiers takes away from the amazing variety in games. It's never happened before NL.

I don't do the dreamies thing anyways. I would rather have loads of different villagers and keep my interest in the game piqued.

It's one of my pet hates, and people who like villagers based on what is popular & "OMG KAWAIIIIIiiii TIER 1 lalalalala..." (usually with even worse spelling & grammar. Maybe something that resembles text-speak...) usually aren't that great at having meaningful conversations anyway....

So I guess it acts as a helpful filter & warning system! Like what one of the commenters said above about people who pick up an ugly purse that they wouldn't normally like...but they do now it has a brand label stuck on it...they think it's a form of prestige.

My town is a mixture of whoever I really like. Some I was surprised were actually quite popular, (like Marina, I really wanted her & was shocked she was so popular! I thought a pink octopus would be considered "weird" but there you go!)

My villagers are Wart Jr & Keaton--Tier 5
Tangy, Phoebe & Muffy--Tier 2 or 3
Lobo--not sure of his tier, i think he's a 3-4? I know he's not as popular as many wolves, same with Freya--my favourite snooty.
Kid Cat--I think he's actually Tier 1 or maybe 2? I know he's very popular, but I just love him because he's quirky & cute.

I also have Colton who seems to be popular, but I can't stand him and want to replace him with Stitches--a big tier 1, but I love him because like everyone else--he reminds you of your beloved childhood bear--so that makes sense & he's in a lot of hearts.

So as you can see I have villagers from all the Tiers & they are all my best friends that I never want to leave (except Colton!) and I've also had high tier ones I found boring and had leave--such as Chief & Zucker.

It's a shame the tier system means some of my picks for my second town like Annalisa, Amelia etc will be harder to find due to "autovoiding" and that word alone sounds sociopathic to me! :P
NOT GOING TO MAKE ME ANY BELLS??? AREN'T POPULAR ENOUGH?? FINE, TO THE VOID WITH YOU!

When the tier system did influence me was when I had a cycle town, knowing when I was being duped or not--because it is annoying to have someone offer another seller a crazy 15 mill bells for a tier 1... and then try to argue with you... "thanks" (sarcastic thanks) to the tier system it gave villagers a bell worth, and you need to stick to it for consistency.
I'd rather have set equal prices, but then seeing them give more bells to someone else did make me feel bad about myself & want to charge the same.

I did however try to even things out by holding onto the lower tiers for as many days as the higher tiers.

Also thanks for asking this question, as in some ways it's brave to question the tier system--as so many people are likely to become defensive & not want to admit that they do want to chose the most popular villagers.

I was happy to see that most of the votes & comments are actually just as unhappy with the tier system as you.

Not really. Honestly I don't care what tiers villagers are, I usually go for villagers I actually like and have always liked in general and not because of their recent popularity or popularity. It's just that most of them happen to be high tiers like Chief and Genji. I do agree though I see too many dreamie lists with all tier one villagers and it's getting a bit repetitive. I just wish people would give other tiers a chance instead of going for all of the tier ones because of their popularity imo.

But I can understand if people genuinely like those tier one villagers, but I feel like most people only go for them because of their popularity and because how everyone thinks they're cute etc.

Not at all for me, and I stil haven't decided if I am going to use my spare cart to cycle or not but if I do I am certainly not going to ignore more than half the villagers in the game from getting dream homes because of an outdated list..I know many seeking t3 and below and if I do have a cycle I would never autovoid or even use the list to assume they aren't wanted based on my experiences seeking t3-5 and seeing others try to as well. Equal opportunity cycling, lol.

I didn't even find out about the tier list until about 2 weeks ago. I generally just go by how cute they are. Except Wolfgang, who was my favorite when the first game came to the US. I've always loved him :)

My dreamies have nothing to do with tiers or popularity. I don't understand why people would want villagers only because they're popular; why not fill your town with villagers you actually like?

I like my villagers because I think they're cute or because I've had them in previous towns and grew to like them.

Some people are just following trends but I think also people realize that they can "use" popular villagers to trade for villager they want, for money, etc., as sad as that sounds. I didn't understand why people liked Marshal so much until I actually got him in my game. He just moved in one day and he really left an impression on me. I've had friends make fun of me for liking popular villagers but I don't mind either way. Some of my favorite villagers are tier 4 or 5. In fact, I was able to get some of them easily BECAUSE of their low popularity haha.

The only T1 villager I have is Merengue, and she's been with me since the beginning of NL before I knew about any tier list, so she's stayed just because I think she's so cute. (Rolf and Teddy were original also, and I love them.) Everyone I've picked out though has been just because I like them, and because I like to have a wide variety of species and personality types.

I feel so bad because I just looked and I have all T1 and T2 villagers but I love them all so much and didn't do it intentionally. 4 of them were campsite finds.

My only top tier dreamie is Marshal, and I only like him because I love squirrel villagers. :3
I also have some 2 and 3 tier villagers in both of my towns, but I liked them way before New Leaf.

Makes me sad to see some of my favorite villagers who aren't popular gets voided because hardly anyone wants them :(

I hear ya. If I didn't already have 3 normals I'd pick up Melba since she's the closest thing to Huggy I can get now.

Not at all. I don't even look at the list to determine my dreamies. It's about who I want, not what everyone else has.

Sometimes! At first I was very iffy about getting tier one villagers because I knew they would cost so much but I gave in and got some. I get why a lot of the tier 1 villagers are tier 1 because they are super cute. Some of them confuse me though lol
