Just reading through this and it's so nice to see everyone on these forums is so supportive!
And they're all right, don't let anyone get you down. It's your island, not theirs and as long as you like it, that's all that matters, unless you want/ask for specific feed back on what to improve. Your friend here sound like a real jerk (but I get their your friend so I'm sure they're worth keeping around but this is just not okay), to most people it's like the unspoken code for most players to never dig holes or take peoples items without explicit permission. It's outright rude and disrespectful. That kind of behaviour is not okay. - Like if you visit someone's house irl, do you just pick up/steal their stuff? No, most people would understandably get annoyed and probably kick the person out. To me at least Animal Crossing worlds feel the same and maybe your friend needs to understand this before/if you let them in again. But as many others said Dream Addresses are a good way to show off your island and people can let a nuclear bomb off in your island with no consequence to you. Or maybe next time, ask to visit their Island so you bare no risk to yours and can still be with them in real time. Also I'm not totally sure how it works, but isn't there a 'Best Friend' thing and if you don't give people that role, they can't dig up anything (I think).
I had a similar experience in new leaf when I invited my boyfriend over, who didn't really understand (and I honestly still think doesn't) how decorating games work and he accidently ended up destroying a few of my flowers , they were pretty rare hybrids too that took ages to breed but at least in this situation I completely understood why/how he did this and couldn't be upset at him (he did apologise too once he realised) because most of the games he plays are fighting and running over any scenery because it doesn't mean anything and I guess the way he viewed animal crossing didn't really allow him to see that there were flowers beneath him or that they were important to not run into, he was just trying to run the fastest, most direct way to the location he was trying to get to. Which is fair enough, and if you maybe think your friend is like this or at least doesn't realise or understand how much those flowers / digging those holes meant to you, you need to tell them clearly so they understand, and hopefully will then be nice enough to apologise.
Good luck
