Over the past few days I've been reading up in the backlogs for the irc channel. Now, everyone that's been doing a particular thing, has also been coming straight from this website. I wouldn't post this at all if the hostmask was unrelated to TBT. Now, If you're one of the people that decides to join, and after a few seconds declare the room dead, stop that.

No, there isn't activity 24/7. We all have lives.

No, we usually don't go out of our way to say hello to people at four in the morning.

If you stay, usually activity will occur.

It's kinda sad, How people join TBT, Go straight to the chat room and no one replies and leaves the chat and the whole of TBT. Seriously though, It's one reason why we don't get a rise in players, only when a new AC game comes out, since everyone will be active on TBT playing it. Anyway, The only time I'd see the IRC active and full is when someone is hosting some sort of event or meeting.

The irc is usually completely unrelated to Animal Crossing as a whole. We don't talk about anything in there that even has to do with the forums most of the time, which is nice considering that we can talk about topics that might not be suitable for certain people on the forums providing that it tends to be a more mature audience in there. Stuff like M rated games and television. We don't really have events either.. it's just idle chit chat. Sometimes we get people in there that aren't even a part of the forums, such as my roommate.

You have the completely wrong image of the IRC. It's quite regularly pretty active with generic chat about a lot of different topics and due to the chat being a more personal form of communication a lot of us have developed friendships.

This is very true. The casual/usual's on irc really all know each other now. The people on the chat tend to stick together and learn more about each other because of the personal nature of being able to state whatever is on your mind moreso than the forums. Jas0n and I were already buddies before the irc, but once it took off I can definitely say I know him better. Same with Thunderstruck, Sockhead, psycho, and quite a few others that mingle with us.
