Hi, guys.
Just want to relate an experience that is clearly my fault, as whenever you leave the gate open and have guests over unsupervised, you are asking for trouble. I allowed guests anyway knowing that risk out of kindness, to allow people to shop at my Emporium, pick fruit (including the many perfect pears throughout my town), and just wander.
Well, I had my first experience seeing the repercussions of my actions. I returned home just now to see the following projects or design features destroyed:
(1) On the north west of my town is a hammock and bell aligned vertically. Covering the north, west, and east sides of the bell were eight pink azeleas. I also had two rare tree stump designs, one to the left, one to the right, of the bell. All bushes and stumps were dug up, and extra holes also just for fun.
(2) The same amount of bushes were placed in inverted position (so bushes on the south instead of north, but still on the left and right) around the hammock, but this time there were eight white azeleas. There were also 6 orange cosmos, which were taken, in addition to the bushes dug up.
(3) All of my jacob's ladders were taken. I cannot recall the exact number, but perhaps 7.
(4) To the bottom right of my character's house were two flower gardens with approximately 8 carnations each for the first, and 8 pink cosmos for the second. I also had pink carnations surrounding the left, front, and right of my house, which were also all taken.
(5) Most trees were left in tact, but the guest cut down trees on a random basis, perhaps because that was more creative in destruction.
(6) The bushes around a path I made below the station were all dug up, and approximately 12 orange roses taken.
(7) The holly bushes, approximately 20 in number, were dug up to the right of my station.
(8) All pink roses and other assorted hybrids were taken around villagers' houses below the main tree of my town, above the town hall.
(9) Three purple pansies and three blue pansies were taken.
(10) Other rare tree stump designs throughout the town were dug up, and the two bushes in front of my many benches were also dug up.
(11) Several other cosmos, including a few orange ones but also common ones were taken from in front of Fuchsia's house, where I had been amassing them.
(12) All blue roses to the back, left, and right of my blue bench were taken.
This is only the most immediate damage I could spot. Certainly there were more creative destructions done elsewhere in the town, undoubtedly within groves.
Again, I do not blame anyone. I am a little surprised however because EVERYONE left on my list who weren't already best friended were people who participated in my giveaways. I trust the best friended people wholeheartedly.
This is just a game. I will take my time rebuilding what was lost. In the mean time, however, I will remove the overwhelming majority of people from my friend's list, and will close my gate permanently, except when absolutely necessary and under close guard.
Again, this is my fault: I took a risk. However, I would like people to know that this risk truly exists, and is not to be overstated. This shows that people who are restrictive and may seem overbearing may have similar experience and can be empathized with, but also that the people who keep their gates open and are overly trusting are also doing a brave thing.
Most people on my friend's list I have no doubt would not have done this, so I do not mean this to lash out blindly, but neither can I be sure who did it, so I'm going to only leave on who I know well.
In any case, I hope that the stuff taken from me will at least make the game more enjoyable for the person who took them. I know there are far wealthier people here who much more could have been taken from. The items I mentioned above were the sum total of the rare or unusual objects I have for someone to take. Also, I have 9 million bells in my bank, which is, by three million, the most I've had since starting the game in 29 December.
I hope this post does not cause people to lash out at me with a you-should-have-known better attitude. I know. And I did it anyway because I wanted a lot of people to know the joy of being trusted by someone to enjoy their town without being watched over the shoulder every second.
And that is why what was lost is not a total loss for me: those experiences still exist for the people who had them, and I'm glad they had them.
