Can villagers move out without speaking to you?

I'm very keen on most of my villagers, so I want to keep them around. How do you ensure this, and is this foolproof in this game? Do they have to ping you/have the thought cloud above their head thing, or can they move out if you miss them on a day or don't play for a couple of days? And are you sure you will see their thought bubble? What if they're inside their house on the day that they're thinking of moving, or is this just not possible?

They have to talk to you about it.

Nope. They will not move unless you permitted them to do so.

It's definitely not possible for them to move out without them first asking you! which is good lol
