Once and forever
It is gacha in the way that you spend a currency (miles) for a chance at a random character. The fact you don't spend real money is irrelevant since you can play gacha games for free and obtain currency (for example Fire Emblem Heroes) and they don't stop being gacha for that. They could have made it so certain personalities appeared more if you lacked them like the campsite, but instead they completely randomized it (a poor job too) and it often ends up frustrating people looking for their favourites. Nintendo obviously also advertises cuter characters more so they are counting on that and while amiibo are out of stock now but no doubt they will reprint them and many people will turn to those. It's not all coincidence and goodwill on Nintendo's part and I get it, it's their business.
I see, I assumed gacha was being used in a negative connotation, like to denote a money grab, not just describing the spending of in game currency for a randomized reward.
I feel being made to spend in game currency is very different than spending real money, because without something you really want/ need to spend currency on, what is the point of having a currency system at all in the game?
I understand your frustration, but as I probably in the future will want to not have a cranky villager on my island (just not my favorite type) and want to have multiple of other types, I am about to be grateful for the mystery islands being more purely randomized than the campsite.
I don’t think it is goodwill or ill since they are a corporation and corporations are not capable of compassion (people are). But I also think people read more maliciousness/ greed into Nintendo’s actions than is realistic. They want to make money, of course, but there are far worse money grabbing practices out there.
I do think that on this forum we assume a certain style of gameplay is the most common when I don’t know if that is realistic. Among my real life friends and family who play the game, no one is particularly invested in things like ‘dreamie hunting’ mostly they go to an island (or forget and take a random move in) and invite a villager they think is cute (and they seem to find most of them cute). They might want a certain villager or dislike some, but it isn’t a vital thing for them. So I also think what some see as a huge flaw and/ or meanness is actually just a feature most players don’t have strong feelings about.
As I have said, I like the randomness (and have not read anything indicating it is poorly implemented) and would be disappointed to lose it. So I have my own bias.
Again, this isn’t meant as a defense of Nintendo. Bottom line is, as a for profit company they don’t care about your preferences or mine And never will. Like you say, it’s their business, not a goodwill mission.
I do hope that they will re-release the amiibo cards soon, as they have already done in japan. The prices on cards will become less exorbitant and I think it will help ease the frustration across different styles of gameplay. Plus, that’s the only way for them to actually cash in on this whole demand they have created, so it seems likely they will.
Sorry the mystery island experience has not been fun for you, it must be very tiring to be forced to use game time on something you don’t enjoy.
