Banded Dragonfly...?

I was just looking at the screen, not really doing anything, when a dragonfly flew by. Decided to go ahead and catch and my character reacted like I had caught a freakin’ coelacanth or something with the ‘YES! I DID IT!’ and revealed that I had caught a Banded Dragonfly.

Is the Banded Dragonfly, like... really rare in New Horizons? I feel like pretty much all dragonflies were fairly common in New Leaf?

The Banded Dragonfly, at least to me, has ALWAYS been a pain to catch in every Animal Crossing game.
It is worse in this game as I had to catch one for the Museum and three additional ones to give to Flick for the model.

i think bc it's rather hard to catch considering the fact it flies rlly fast n doesn't spawn too often ?? also sells for a decently high price , its like 5k bells !

If I see a dragonfly I tend to stand still and eventually they fly back toward me. They fly away from me when I give chase!

LOL I was running after them like a complete lunatic, but, hey, I do not have to even think about them now.
I have the one for the Museum and three additional ones for Flick.

They're not rare, but I would say they spawn at the same rate as tarantulas/scorpions. The difference is that they move fast and erratically. You never want to run straight to them, nor chase them in a straight line.

They're quite possibly the hardest bug to catch in the entire game just because there's no other bug that moves as fast and erratically as them.

Also, there is one mystery island I went once (where I found Marina) where they were spawning like crazy. There was a lot of dragonflies, and something like 3 or 4 banded dragonflies flying around at the same time.

They're the highest valued flying insect. There are plenty of beetles that are worth more...but, as far as the ones that fly around the map (butterflies, moths, and dragonflies), the banded dragonfly is the highest value at 4,500. So...the strong reaction is probably a result of such.

"yes" just means you haven't caught it yet, but the banded dragonfly is also really uncommon and hard to catch (because its so fast), so good job!

the “yes!” has nothing to do with it’s rarity - you get that whenever you catch a bug or fish for the first time, regardless of its rarity.

It was somewhat rare for me and it was fast. When I caught one, I thought it was the darner dragonfly at first, but when my character said “Yes!” it was the banded dragonfly. The banded is more black with stripes compared to the darner dragonfly

Yuppp... It's pretty rare and flies super fast making it quite hard to catch.

I'd say it was worse in the gamecube game, since they darted right through the acre at the same ludicrous speed the second you got in. and due to game mechanics, if they flew past the entirety of it, they didn't move on to the adjacent acre, but instead despawned

at least here, you basically have all the time in the world to catch. so long as you manage to keep track of its location

honestly, I'd call banded dragonflies in cube crossing the hardest creature to catch of any animal crossing game, period. everything else in cube crossing and every animal crossing game after is an absolute joke, in comparison

Numerous people confusing the usual new catch "Yes!" with the Banded Dragonfly's extra exclamation of "I did it!", huh?

You celebrate because it's challenging to catch, yeah. With the Petaltail Dragonfly gone, which was even faster and rarer, the Banded Dragonfly is likely the single hardest critter to catch, when it darts away at such high speed.
