Anyone else hate when villagers share catchphrases?

Agreed; the first time it happened back in Wild World I googled it because I legitimately thought it was a glitch, lmao. The idea is cute but I personally have a habit of giving my undesired villagers equally undesirable catchphrases and seeing someone like Ankha randomly catch on to it isn't fun 😬

This is something I dislike in the game, I just hate when villagers share their catchphrases with each other because I like everyone to have their own unique catchphrase and not spread it like the flu lol

I changed Ozzie's catchphrase to SKRT SKRT to be funny, and now over half of my villagers are saying it, including Apple 😂

What was an undesirable catchphrase that you gave your villager? 😂just curious!

Omigosh, yes! I didn't realize how bad villagers share each other's catchphrases until my mom's villagers started doing it. I'm going to make sure my villagers don't do it, so I'll probably be keeping theirs original and not changing a thing.

Rudy loves copying people's catchphrase. He copied "tweet tweet" from Piper, "rawr' from Fang, and "deerborn" from Beau. I love him but STAHP.

Not really. It's just like the real world. I see so many words being used by people in a very short span of time because of social media and all that. And when Boyd who is a cranky gorilla starts to say "cheekers", I can't help but laugh.

I want to keep my villagers catchphrase original too but they won’t stop pinging me about it. Does it lower my friendship points if I keep declining to change it?

It does rub me the wrong way. Somehow it feels like the animals have less personality when they all say the same thing.

I had to mass complain to Isabelle to stop everyone in my town from saying woof. Thankfully they don't seem to spread catchphrases if you don't give them unique ones.

If I want to raise a villagers friendship and they ask for a new phrase I often give them a new one and then go straight to Isabelle to reset it before it starts spreading.

i am literally suffering i taught filbert "uwu" because i thought it'd be funny since he's like a baby but noo now EVERYONE on my island is saying uwu and i'm actually dying

Yessss, it really does spread way too easily. Almost wish there was some sort of friend mechanic between villagers too and those who were close enough would share catchphrases instead of everyone. I really like some catchphrases but it really doesnt suit some of the other personalities (like I gave Ozzie 'yeet' a while back but it wound up spreading to my snooties too, pls you're above this ;=; )

Yes I never liked this in new leaf so I don't change them in the game even if they're constantly pinging me about a change.

Marina changes her catchphrase several times a day it's hilarious.

Often when you've just given your villager a new catchphrase to say, they won't adopt any others for a while - Billy has never adopted a catchphrase from other villagers for example, he has always said "dagnaabit" (his original), "ya yeet" (the first one I taught him) and "b-b-buddy" (I taught him that one too lol!) Come to think of it, Ursala has never changed her either apart from what I've given her! So maybe there's some hope here - maybe once you're close enough with all your villagers that you've given them all catchphrases yourself, they'll stop exchanging them constantly?

What really burns my beans though is how brand new villagers will like never keep their catchphrases past like day 2. They are the ones who always have different catchphrases every time I talk to them, while I have to unlock the ability to give them their own! The only time Rodney ever said "le ham" to me was when I invited him from someone's island and his move-in day. After that he's been saying all kinds of different stuff and I'm not a fan honestly.

omg yes! when a villager asks me to come up with a new catchphrase for them, i personalize it to suit that villager alone. i.e. i gave ankha the phrase "servant" and then apollo started using it too but it doesn't suit him :/ it gets kind of annoying having to constantly report catchphrase-stealers to isabelle tbh

i think it's funny, and u can reset it with isabelle so it's no big deal imo

This is why I'm so dead-set on NEVER giving any of my villagers a catchphrase, since I know it will eventually spread around town and I will have no choice but to live with it. It's hilarious to look at when others experience it to be honest, but for me, I want to at least maintain their current catchphrases, since I think a lot of them are pretty suitable.

Nicknames on the other hand, I have no control over. I feel bad turning any of them down when they want to call me something else - so I always comply. :(

In case people dont know, u can complain to Isabelle in order to get villagers to say their original catchphrase again. Because of that I find it funny to change some of my villager's catchphrases and then if it spreads to a villager who I dont want saying it then I will just tell Isabelle.
