An Open Letter to Nintendo

Aside from the fact that the developing team at Nintendo most definitely isn't going to see this, I very much doubt *anything* is going to happen with this feature. Creating island prisons for heavy trading does not seem to be the multiplayer playstyle they are trying to promote, it looks like they just try to let people have fun together, and changing this feature would not be on their list of priorities.

tell person coming to trade not to wear wet suit if you see them wearing one on the arriving screen hold power and put in Sleep mode so it disconnects

I really do not get this mindset. It comes across as paranoid and honestly if I were preparing to trade and the host starts preaching rules like that one at me before I head over I'd likely go "You know what, never mind." Not because I was intending to do anything bad, but I would definitely be insulted by the lack of trust.

I have traded with many people visiting in wetsuits. People like to swim! That should be okay! They will trade with you and leave, it will be fine!

When your visitor starts to do something out of the ordinary, you can always end the session/sleep. Keep an eye on their moves if you do not trust anyone. There is really no point to telling them that in advance.

You can still fence off valuables just like before. What even is the worst that could happen? Do you all have secret diaries written in patterns on the ground or something?

People have money tree gardens, turnips, diy fields, hybrids they don't want picked, and other random stuff that sometimes you drop to empty pockets quickly...

A lot of people trade because it is impossible to get certain items/colors on your own... if they are going to encourage and pretty much force trading among strangers, there should have been anti-griefing features built in. Not everyone is a friend (though the vast majority are good people)... it only takes one jerk to ruin your night.

I am not opposed to blocking jumping off the dock (I don't think jumping off a seaplane dock would be allowed irl either 😅) but since people seem to like it, maybe just block it when gates are open. Or, make swimming a friends only activity, which is probably better. Or maybe fix trading to be through mail and safe so that it doesn't take 10 min to pick up a mixer....

I dont see why people care about picked or run over flowers.. they just grow back...

I just happened to be wearing a wet suit cause I thought it was cute when I attempted to visit someone today and I had no idea about this till now

It would be cool if there was a mechanic where you could ask Orville to put up a barrier around the edges of the dock so you could "turn off" diving from there, then you could do your trades easily, and from there you could ask him to take down the barriers to allow diving again.

It makes me so sad that we have to worry about this in general 😞 Why can't everyone just be fair and not steal so we don't have to be so anxious when trading.

...Do you guys not pick up all dropped items before letting people onto your island for celeste/turnip/exc? That's what I do. then I don't care where they go on my island (though I had someone once pick all my hybrids I was gonna pick for DIY crafting... that wasn't fun.) other than the flower picker, I've not had any problems holding onto items for trade until the person is there trading with me.

Personally, I'm always standing at my entrance when I trade, so moving a bit further up in order to see the entrance to the airport is no big deal. I get what you're saying about hosting giveaways, but someone could easily sneak away, change, and get into the water from basically any location and be MIA. I don't think there's an easy solution to this that would please all parties. However, I do think that if you're doing a giveaway, you're in your right to have people arrive at your island without wearing a suit. For quick trades on the other hand, it does seem a bit excessive like some others mentioned but that's just my own opinion.

This could be an oversight that might gets fixed in the next update, or they just dont think it a big deal to not restrict wetsuits to friends only since the other protective trading mechanics are still in place, like they still cant cut your trees and such without being your friends.

I would love an option to send a particular person back to their island without having to kick everyone else. Like say maybe you can pick them from a list and Resetti or someone picks them up and take them back, but i cant trade online yet so this option might be already there without me even knowing lol.

If you trade with 1 person at a time, you should be able to watch what they're doing. To be honest, if you trade with multiple people, you can still watch what they are doing.

If anyone wonders off, just pull the plug (i.e. DC)

To be honest, as someone whom has had several very negative experiences in the trading community, taking away the ability to control where people go altogether by allowing just ANYONE to jump off the airport pier is terrifying to me, enough to make me back off trading and allowing people to sell turnips on my island altogether. I agree limiting visitors on their privileges when on another's island, like with the shovel and axe, would be the best fix. That way everyone can still enjoy the feature of jumping off, cause it is super cool you can do that-- but I would only trust people on my best friends list to have full access to my island, ever. That is the reason after all why they do limit activities you can do until you make it onto the best friends list. Diving should be included in the same category. In my opinion, anyway.

No such option exists, though I would love if that were an option! If you put your system into sleep or end the session, everyone will be kicked off the island.

I find that most hosts get around that by disconnecting the session for everyone, then only inviting back the people who weren't doing problematic behaviour. Many also choose to have a few rules or guidelines that they clearly set out before initiating trades, so that people can understand why a disconnect happens if it does.

I think I would be okay with keeping the feature as I think its pretty cool to jump off of piers/docks/cliffs but just make it that so when your gates are open, the ability to do so is disabled kinda like how shovels/axes are prohibited unless you're best friends.
