Hybrid pansies

I'm trying to grow hybrid red pansies so that I could grow another hybrid pansy.
However it is taking forever for them to grow, or I'm doing something wrong.

I use the combination of red pansies and orange pansies. Does the order matter?
Also I don't have the Beautiful Town ordinance in effect.

I used red and orange for mine. I put them like this on the diagonal so that reds only touched oranges and vice versa.

I also really restricted the other flowers touching in my town and only watered these, so the beautiful town ordinance helped my other flowers survive. I guess without beautiful town I would only water the wilted flowers each day? It's a pain, but I got used to wandering around and plucking up the flowers my villagers had planted before I went to bed each night so I wouldn't wake up with random hybrids I wasn't looking for. I put the hybrid reds down on my beach immediately when I found them so I wouldn't mix them up with the plain.

You can breed red pansies by combining red and red, as well as red and yellow.
Make sure you plant them diagonally — the order does not matter.

You can also buy red pansies from Leif's gardening store.
I would suggest going to the island and taking red pansies from the island tours.
That is how I obtained my non-hybrid pansies in the beginning in order to breed hybrids.

I think they want the "special" red pansies that you need to get purple pansies. Combining red and red just gives you plain red, doesn't it?

These are the combinations to create a "special" (hybrid) red pansy:
• blue and red
• orange and red
• purple and red

I'm not sure how breeding works without the beautiful town ordinance.
But with it, I know that you should only water the flowers you want to breed.
For example, if I wanted to breed blue roses, I would only water the blue roses.
If I water other flowers, they'll be more likely to breed too.
Only watering the blue basically singles them out.
That's my experience at least.

Question...
Are you trying to ultimately breed blue and purple pansies?

I know I failed when I was trying... because of this hybrid red pansy.
I ended up buying a few blues and purples. Now I have dozens of each after breeding.
