Your thoughts on humor when it comes to offensive/ traumatic things?

yeah but if u are a dick abt then it's not a good joke. and a transphobic joke or a joke that makes fun of rape victims (especially if the joke teller isnt a survivor) are never good jokes

If you're being a jerk in the first place, you aren't joking and trying to make light of a bad situation; you're just being a jerk. Trans jokes can totally be funny, and so can gay jokes, and (sometimes) rape jokes. Dead baby jokes and other messed up jokes can also be funny. Yeah it depends on your audience, but still. No joke is ever unfunny to every single person that hears it, and people should be allowed to say what they want. I mean I've heard trans people make jokes about being trans, saying things like "I sucked so much at being a man, I became a woman," and that's fine to me. And again, humor is a great coping mechanism, and if it helps people, great. We can't all walk be walking on eggshells, constantly censoring ourselves because someone around us might not like what we're saying. If that was the case, comedians wouldn't exist, we'd all be living in fear of negative or foul language, and free speech would be dead.

trans jokes =/= transphobic jokes. it depends on the person telling the joke and the context. i guess it is possible-ish to make ok jokes about rape but in general i ****ing despise rape and sexual abuse jokes and usually if i hear one it makes me want to light the joke teller ok fire because of how insensitive it is

If I heard someone say rape, sexual assault or sexual harassment was okay in a serious manner, I'd be furious too (I don't like to throw my personal life out there for everyone, but I was sexually harassed in high school so it's not like I don't understand why people would be offended). I don't condone that kind of stuff and I never would, but when it's obvious someone is kidding, and when you know they're absolutely not that kind of person (and it's usually fairly easy to tell), it's different than them saying it's okay.

I don't think jokes about rape victims are funny, but I think jokes about Bill Cosby being a rapist are funny because he deserves to be skewered and made fun of. Likewise, I don't think jokes about people being transgender are funny, but I think jokes about Caitlyn Jenner are funny because there are plenty of reasons to make fun of her besides being transgender.

yeah, well, it really depends on the context i guess. but most sexual abuse/rape jokes i've heard haven't been like that at all, which is why i don't like them. like, at all. but you'rd right, you cant judge a person based on one joke. but a distasteful joke can be harmful and just generally a ****ty thing that Maybe Probably Shouldnt Have Been Said .
and even "harmless" jokes can b bad bc of, like, rape culture n ****

I agree. Rape jokes aren't really about the victims, though. No one would want to make that person feel like they deserved it or like it was their fault. It's about roasting the pieces of **** that thought it was okay to do that, or, I guess about using the word in a different context for humor (like saying you raped someone in a video game, meaning you totally destroyed them). It's a touchy word, and not the kind of thing you use when you're around, say, your grandma or an actual victim of rape.

I also think that, in certain cases, jokes about being transgender are okay if you're around non-trans people or trans people that you're cool with that can laugh about being trans. If you're around someone that's sensitive about being trans, or doesn't feel like they're accepted, joking probably isn't the best idea. Not to keep repeating myself, but it all comes down to intent and whether you intend to be hurtful or not.

Rape jokes are not about victims and are about roasting rapists? Rarely. Google "rape jokes" the vast, vast majority of them are disgusting and are at the expense of the victims.

Trans people joking about being trans is okay, other people doing so generally isn't okay as they mostly aren't the same types of jokes that trans people say about themselves, they're usually transphobic jokes. A cis person making a joke out of trans people around other cis people is not cool, at all. If a trans person laughs about a transphobic joke, they're probably uncomfortable not "cool" with it. I don't see how you can keep excusing really upsetting people by pulling the "intent" card.

Rape culture really isn't a thing in America, though. No one is hated more than rapists or pedophiles here, and not just by average citizens either, but by other criminals. If a rapist or pedophile goes to prison and other inmates find out what they're in for, they're likely to get the **** beaten out of them by people in prison for aggravated assault, battery, murder and other heinous crimes. I've even heard of prison guards hinting to other inmates that someone is a rapist or pedophile and letting them get their ass kicked. No one, besides rapists, here approves of rape, or thinks it's okay.

In parts of the middle east, however, rape culture is a very real thing and there have been cases of women being stoned to death for being raped. In Mexico, what we consider statutory rape is legal, as the age of consent there is 12 years old. I think it's important to make the distinction between our culture and cultures that actually condone rape.

The jokes you find on the internet are always going to be worse and more disgusting than what someone will say in person because your name and face aren't attached to the things you say on the internet like they are when you're right in front of someone.

And I guess in your opinion, only victims can make jokes about their situation, only trans people can make jokes about being trans, only gay people can make gay jokes, only 9/11 survivors can make jokes about 9/11 etc. I disagree with that, I'll joke about whatever I want if it makes me feel better, and if I genuinely upset someone when I'm doing it I'll apologize.

rape culture is a thing tho..? both in america and ehere i live in sweden. while rapists, pedophiles and molesters are very disliked (as they should be lmao) many cases of sexual harrassment, rape etc are excused and brushed off. victim blaming is rly common, ppl don't blame the prefators ("boys sill be boys" wvr heard that lol?)

in cases of rape where a person is jumped and attacked by a stranger ppl show way more hatred for the rapist than if the rapist raped their drunk SO. in the latter case many ppl excuse the rapist's behaviour and think that basically it's the drunk person's fault.

also many rape jokes use the word "rape" very casually and jokingly n Like Thats Not Cool To Victims lmao

If it's to cope with the experience, sure. If it's not to cope with the experience and no one else is around, ya.

I tend to laugh at almost anything, I actually checked if this statement I aforementioned was true by staring at a blank piece of paper...I didn't last long without laughing.

It's really difficult for me to not laugh at anything, I do indeed find these events tragic and that they are of no laughing matter but it seems that I have a case of uncontrollable laughter, or so it seems my brain is processing a memory of the funniest joke in the world.

I like dark and offensive humor, especially if it pokes fun at a societal issue.

For example, how many cops does it take to change a lightbulb?

None, they just beat the room for being dark.

I LOVE humour and I believe laughter is truly good for the soul ... But NEVER when it is offensive, hurtful, or about personal or another person's anguish or trauma ... or about truly obscene subjects ... Somethings are just never, ever funny

I, too, like dark jokes. What's worse than a hundred babies in a barrel?

One baby in a hundred barrels.

Snap.

i joke almost exclusively about my own personal misfortunes. i have a super dark sense of humor aimed solely at myself. yay coping.
