im laughing at the people bashing fetishes/smut/etc
yes, people have weird fetishes. VERY weird fetishes. not only can people not help what their fetishes are most of the time, but that is not what makes deviantart a cesspool -- not in the least. DA may not be the place for smut, as there are rules against it, and people are better off posting to sites like FA or HF for that sort of thing. so, in that way, no, its not entirely appropriate, and yes, fetishes are crazy, but that isn't the issue here
i will be honest and say that i dont actually participate in the DA community. however, ive been there for 11 years so i know a general overview. if you know how terrible the youtube comment community is -- it's basically like that. TONS of young people. most things go unpoliced because it is a gigantic site and they do not have enough staff to cover it. weird cliques form, theres lots of aggression, etc. people also dont really know what the whole "comment" section even means on DA. its supposed to be there for the artwork, to tell the artist what you like, dont like, maybe give critique, etc. however, it is used for... so many things that arent that. not to say people dont do that, but ive gotten very strange comments over the years that had no relevance to the artwork. its like people dont actually look at the artwork unless it belongs to a very talented artist.
DA implemented a thing that, when you favorite something, a thing pops up to tell you to leave a comment because they wanted to combat the issue of people faving art and not saying anything else about it. i do not personally see any improvement, but that may just be from my perspective. again, you have so so so many people on the site, most of them being young kids, its probably just not going to work very well. even FA, a smaller site with mostly adults (i would hope), people dont generally leave comments -- its the same trend. im guilty of it as well, absolutely. honestly, i prefer the tumblr system where you can just reblog something and if you have a thing to say about it, you can write it in the tags should you be so inclined. that might be just me though.
i do believe there is a lot of favoritism for talented artists + people who have the premium membership, as mentioned above, but i cant really comment on that either because i, again, dont really look at DA's forum sections or anything.
a huge issue right now is that DA is broke. they literally dont have enough money to work with the site to improve it. they fired a ton of employees to cut costs, and then they raised the price of premium membership for about 10(?) years' worth of inflation all in one go. all without informing their userbase. they are NOT communicating with anyone, they're ****ing around with the site without saying a word, and people are furious about that. so, its causing huge issues because theyre not fixing things that need to be fixed and people originally thought it was because they weren't listening -- in reality, it's because they're broke, and tried gaining revenue all at once by shooting up prices.
another thing about the community is art theft, which is horrifyingly rampant, and though it's rampant everywhere, DA made a weird post about how "it's only art theft if it's a true work of art hanging in a museum, otherwise it's stealing intellectual property and not art theft" or some weird ****. people were mad about that too, the post was worded strangely and left a bad taste in many peoples' mouths.
i know this is long and unorganized but what im saying is the issue lies within the size of the site, the lack of ability to do anything to monitor such a large population properly, the fact that the devs dont communicate, and the ****ty community as a whole. its not about fetishes or smut (though that should go on other sites), its about the elitism bred within the frothing depths of the community.
