Granted, some people will follow a trend just for the heck of it, but the start of the villager trend is always a group of people that all happen to like the same thing. (At least on this topic)
I've never actually understood when people say this. Do some people really do this? I mean, if I didn't think Marshal was cute, why would I want him in my town just because he's popular? What's the fun of that? They don't like him but they get him, and probably as a result someone who REAAAALLLY wanted him doesn't, and then they just ignore him? That's so sad.
I happen to have quite a few popular villagers, and NO ONE is impressed by that. lol Trust me, if I had gotten them just to impress people, I'd be disappointed. The fact is, pretty much anyone can get any villager. So no one is looking at each other's villagers with crazy envy...at least I hope they're not (for their sake of enjoying their game). I really think that the popular villagers just happen to appeal to more people because of their design. That's all.
Yes. I think psychology is really interesting, even when applied to something as simple as a video game. Certain qualities of things definitely make them appeal more to people.People keep saying "the same reason you dislike/like anything" as if there aren't reasons behind why people have preferences. There are. The most popular villagers aren't just popular for no reason. It's not just a coincidence that they all happen to be more sought after than the other villagers; it's because of their design, their personality, their atmosphere, unique combinations of miscellaneous factors. Dismissing the logic and psychology behind that is kind of missing the point.
Here is an interesting thing. People hate Barold. He is a lazy bearcub. Do you know who else is a lazy bearcub? Stitches. He is the most popular villager. They just judge villagers based on their looks. Also, if they hate villagers like Willow, Gigi, and Elise for being mean to other villagers, Ankha is no different.
