Why do people like/hate these villagers?

I like Katt. Not only because she shares my birthday, but because her appearance really matches up with her personality type and I just think she looks cool overall.

It's all about preference. Certain villagers are popular because more people happen to have the same preferences towards them. Granted, some people will follow a trend just for the heck of it, but the start of the villager trend is always a group of people that all happen to like the same thing. (At least on this topic)

I've never actually understood when people say this. Do some people really do this? I mean, if I didn't think Marshal was cute, why would I want him in my town just because he's popular? What's the fun of that? They don't like him but they get him, and probably as a result someone who REAAAALLLY wanted him doesn't, and then they just ignore him? That's so sad.

I happen to have quite a few popular villagers, and NO ONE is impressed by that. lol Trust me, if I had gotten them just to impress people, I'd be disappointed. The fact is, pretty much anyone can get any villager. So no one is looking at each other's villagers with crazy envy...at least I hope they're not (for their sake of enjoying their game). I really think that the popular villagers just happen to appeal to more people because of their design. That's all.

It works the same way in real life, especially with things like clothing. Some people (probably most) genuinely enjoy wearing a certain type of clothes, it doesn't matter if it's trendy or not. Other people wear certain things because other people wear them. It is probably fun to them because they could gain popularity for having a classically pretty town or something. By the time the next trend comes around, they'll move on and get the new trendy villagers. Jealousy is bound to happen because of the way humans are. I'm not condoning it at all, and there are definitely ways to be happy with what one has, but it does happen. Doesn't matter if it's a popular villager or not, someone is going to see what one person has and be upset that they don't have it. Mostly, though a trend is started because a majority of people enjoy said object/style/whatever.

why does anyone like or dislike anything? personally, the three popular ones are more aesthetically pleasing. I like katt but wouldn't want her as a villager.

People keep saying "the same reason you dislike/like anything" as if there aren't reasons behind why people have preferences. There are. The most popular villagers aren't just popular for no reason. It's not just a coincidence that they all happen to be more sought after than the other villagers; it's because of their design, their personality, their atmosphere, unique combinations of miscellaneous factors. Dismissing the logic and psychology behind that is kind of missing the point.

Yes. I think psychology is really interesting, even when applied to something as simple as a video game. Certain qualities of things definitely make them appeal more to people.

Here is an interesting thing. People hate Barold. He is a lazy bearcub. Do you know who else is a lazy bearcub? Stitches. He is the most popular villager. They just judge villagers based on their looks. Also, if they hate villagers like Willow, Gigi, and Elise for being mean to other villagers, Ankha is no different.

I'm pretty sure the only reason that some villagers are liked/disliked is whether they're cute or not. I'm not saying that it's shallow or anything like that, since I also only decide by looks.

Also, about Amelia, I think she's pretty neat. She looks cool, I guess.

I've had Marshal and Ankha both.
The day Ankha moved in the first thing I said was probably along the lines of ugh (though i did warm up to her). That was also the day I discovered the tiers and was so surprised so many people liked her. I ended up selling her however.
When Marshal moved in randomly I thought he was kind of cute, but didn't like him, just sold him.
I think those two are pretty basic villagers, I don't get the rage for them, but to each their own I guess..
Lolly... just ordinary to me!
I understand completely some of the top tier of course, villagers like Marina, Merengue, Molly, Fauna, Beau, Eric... etc, all super cute, which leads me to believe it's just a personal opinion junction sort of thing.
I don't get the dislike for Shari. I love her.

Gigi is cute,I like her shiny eyes,I can see why people hate the other two... No offense.Lolly is the cutest outta the 3.I like Lucky more than Ankha and does not like Marshal's mouth.

I'll tell you why I like Lolly.

She's a cat, and she's cute.

I doubt it's much different for anyone else.

There are only so many personalities, but the appearance of a villager is honestly what makes them most unique. If they're cute, pretty, interesting, whatever... yeah, people will probably choose them over poor Katt or Gigi or Barold.

It's just a matter of opinions, but I think people also get caught up with popularity aspect. Ankha and Marshal are popular, so they become harder to obtain. This makes having them in your town more prestigious in a way, so more people want them and they become more and more popular.

Also there are a lot of kinda iffy villagers (the hippos, gorillas, chickens etc), so more unique ones like Ankha are bound to stand out.

Yup, it's all based on looks. That's because the actual personalities are exactly the same. There are 8 personality types, so there's basically just 8 villagers. But you can choose how they look, so people do. Of course people are going to choose villagers based on looks when that's the only aspect that changes... If you had a choice between a comfortable shirt that was ugly and a comfortable shirt that you thought looked nice, you're obviously going to choose the one that looks nice, even if they're exactly the same in every other way. It's the same sort of thing. People just want what they think looks nice

Its like asking someone why they don't like mustard and why they love ketchup. It all comes down to personal tastes. They either like or hate how a villager looks. Sounds shallow but if you plan on keeping the same ten villagers forever it makes sense to get what you like. Personally most of my Zombie list is ever changing villagers, to me its more realistic that not everyone is a pretty villager.

I personally think Marshals pretty cute but if he hadn't randomly moved in I wouldn't have went looking for him. I could care less about Ankha and Lolly.

I love Katt I find her design to be cool and fitting for her personality. I had Barold in a previous town and he was ok but when he wanted to move I let him.

Marshal= He's cute and is all white. For a smug he's quite adorable.
Ankha= She's unique and so is her house. I don't care much for her myself (I gave her away to someone months ago), but I can see why people like her.
Lolly= No idea. I've had her twice and have let her go. She's cute, but not cute enough for me to keep.

Now for Barold, Gigi and Katt. They are not easy on the eyes, and are unique not in a good way. I'd personally not have any of them in my town.

I think it is a matter of taste. I love Marshal and I am looking for him. Ankha is goddess like and Lolly for me is like Rosie so Im not looking for Lolly.

I admit I am scared of Gigi. I havent exactly seen anyone with Barold or Katt.

I think Town is a matter of preference and speaks a lot of the Mayor's personality. Mix em up a bit if you want.

I had Marshall but not for long due to an accidental out but he was not clicking with me, I loved his house, and he did have some smug dialogue I never heard before...until Ed who is also not clicking so I think for me he didn't fit how I like my Smugs. I also had Filbert in that town, a suprise favorite so Marshall was overshadowed in the cute squirrel department. Lolly I have she was a starter, I did not intend to keep but she grew on me.

I met Katt while getting signatures in someone's town and it made me consider her, she really is not as bad as I heard, she was cute to me. Gigi I had in City Folk, and I think she is great but I haven't seen her in NL, the snooties are toned down too, so she likely is not as mean as she was there but I like her.
