Why did the art gallery have to come back?

Don't mind me, this is ranting for the sake of ranting and nothing more.

I have always loathed the art gallery in these games. Compared to every other collection activity, it's needlessly tedious. Why can we only buy one piece of art? And why does it have to be mailed? It's RIGHT THERE, just hand it over like every other purchase! And why does the fake art mechanic still exist? The majority of what Redd sells is fake! Combined with the one a day rule it artificially inflates the value of something that's functionally just differently shaped fossils, and it's a waste of the player's time.

Dozens of features missing from New Leaf at the time of writing and THIS nonsense is what they choose to bring back first? Sure, let's not bring back any number of fan favorites, we'll drag in the sleazy fox first! Ugggggh rant concluded. Thanks for reading, have a good day!

What would you have liked them to bring back first?

I finished all of my fossils, so I am actually glad to have a bit more to collect for my gallery; but I can see how the fakes are annoying.

Edit: typo.

You're missing a big part of Redd and Japanese lore with foxes being tricky/mischievous but rant away lol. Point is there are fakes for a reason get my drift? He be that tricky fox from folklore : ) I enjoy the art I don't mind fakes having legit artwork to set around my homes/buildings is fab fun <3

Redd is important and also it gives some players more to do, a lot more art has been added so its quite a task to collect all the art and I think that it was a great idea to bring Redd back!

I don't know, I think it's kind of cool. I've always liked art history but I know a lot of people don't take the course or venture further, so I think it's kind of cool to bring this sort of feature in and show people old master artworks.

I also really like the fake artwork because it shows how humorous the direction the art team took it. Like I remember in NL, the Discobolus of Myron fake artwork had him holding a UFO or something weird like that.

Why shouldn't it have come back? I love displaying art in my house, and now around my island even, I love that they added Starry Night as the twinkling painting (among a lot of other new works of art!), I love trying to figure out if the art is real and now I love that Redd sells furniture colors that your cranny doesn't, I love learning about art that I wasn't previously familiar with, I love collecting things to fill up my museum and it felt less fun without the art--especially since I hate bugs and we don't have diving either--and Redd has been in the franchise since the beginning and a lot of people love his role as a trickster kitsune and enjoy the art gallery. If collecting the art isn't your thing you don't have to do it, and if you wanna complete your museum still then you can buy the real art from other players or even just google a guide so you always know which art is fake!

Edit: One thing I do have to admit is that not being able to sell fake artworks to Timmy & Tommy is absolutely awful, though... I know you can't sell fakes in NL either, but I feel like if I'm remembering correctly then Reese either just says she can't buy it but she'll buy everything else, or she says she can dispose of it? In this game, I tried to sell a ton of things including a fake painting to the cranny and they said they couldn't take fake art and that I would have to reselect every single thing that I wanted to sell and it made me so mad!

On the flip side of this negativity, I should praise just how absolutely well-done the implementation of the feature is in New Horizons. The art looks great, the ability to survey it up and down to confirm whether it's real is incredible - so much better than the New Leaf implementation of just 'try to turn the camera so you can sort of see if the low DPI art looks off'. The small additions they make to the art and how it fits into the world... really, it is stunning.

Love or hate the mechanic, the small attention to detail they put into these features is really great - and I think it's always best to look to these positive aspects of features than just concluding you don't like it because you want everything immediately and aren't willing to put in a time investment for at least some of the games' features.

Everyone enjoys different aspects of the game, and this one just isn’t your cup of tea. That’s fine. Lots of people, me included, really missed it though, and are thrilled it’s back.

Personal opinion, but I think it would be lame without the counterfeits. I decided to not look at a guide this time around, and actually had a great time tracking down pics of the real pieces to compare to. It feels like I’m getting more to do, more to engage with, more to learn, even! ^ェ^

I agree with the art mechanics being tedious. I forgot about them to be honest, I'd rather waste my bells to get all items and just give the fake ones to villagers or now just put them on the island for fun. But I alsoagree that the fake art is fine, some of the fake ones are pretty funny too.

the art gallery is a huge part of ac and redd is one of the most popular npcs. while there might’ve been features that i would’ve loved in place of the art gallery, i’m really happy they brought the art gallery back as it gives us one more time to focus on and strive towards completing

The art gallery has been a staple in AC games from the beginning and a lot of players complained that they didn’t have access to it. There’s nothing stating that you need to take part in the completion of it, and with the boat docking at the secret island you can pretty much ignore it. It’s just something a lot of us have been looking forward to :)

Still, though. I wish there would at least be a guaranteed genuine art piece per visit. I just had Redd over and all four pieces of art were fake. If it is true that Redd only visits very rarely, my art gallery is never going to be completed at this rate...

Can you just not unlock it by never donating any art to Blathers? Out of sight, out of mind.

Side note, I love the art gallery but I'm not too fond of the new museum exterior. I liked the old one better.

I love the art gallery. There were a lot of paintings, but especially sculptures, that I wasn't aware of, or really knew anything about. Seeing them in NL taught me something. Now, it looks like we have even more to collect in NH, so I get the chance to revisit favorites and learn about new artwork!

I love that we have the paintings, it's also allows people to learn about well known paintings.

Also the boat is kinda cute!

AC is supposed to take time!! Don’t get stressed that you can’t finish the art gallery fast, it’s always been one of the hardest ones to finish

Did you check everything properly? Redd is supposed to have a guaranteed genuine piece (at least he did in the older games - seems weird to change that now). If Redd is still around, I'm recommend looking up a guide and checking again, because I'm sure that there should be at least one real thing!

I always thought the art had to be mailed to you because if you end up buying a fake one, realistically you'd want to bring it back to Redd on that same day. He mails it to you to avoid confrontation and confirms that the purchase is FINAL and there are no refunds.

The art gallery and Redd are a huge part of Animal Crossing. I'm happy they brought it back quickly; I always love it when Redd visits and I love seeing the gallery slowly fill up with the pieces of art I purchase.
