An interview was published with Leslie Swan who was the localization manger for dozens of Nintendo games, including Animal Crossing and played a part in its history.
The whole interview is very interesting (she voice acted Peach in Mario 64!), but of course I really recommend the part about Animal Crossing!

Interesting that the reason “Forest” was taken out was due to legal reasons. “Animal Acres” would’ve been a fun title too if it had worked!
I was always interested in the process behind localizing GC since it became so different from the original so I’m glad I could have so many questions answered in this.

That's so funny; Animal Acres is what I used to name my Harvest Moon farms when they let you have 12 characters. I'm glad they chose something else, since the name would have become less relevant over time. I wonder what makes 'Animal Forest' unable to be trademarked. Too common of words, I guess?
