Why can't I plant money trees??

I tried to plant a money tree but instead it was buried, NOT PLANTED. I'm really confused about this, is it to do with the Welcome Amiibo update? Or is it a bug?

Are you sure you used the golden shovel? I just planted some so it should still work.

I think the smallest amount you can plant is 1,000 bells to grow a money tree. How much bells did you bury?
