Do you mean only popular villagers? For most villagers I usually just give them away or only take a small amount.
i gave away marina and marshal! i don't regret it at all though, bc they went to loving homes. the people who got them just didn't have a ton of nmt, and i just thought it was a lil sad they couldn't get their dreamies- the market can be brutal lol
well i havent sold anybody for low buuuuut i managed to get sherb with this:

some random piece of furniture that doesnt have high value
but i gifted the person i traded with some black roses as well because i was super appreciative of her because at that time I WAS BROKE IN NMT (kinda still am lol) and i was like omg tysm i got sherb and for so cheap to ugh bless her soul ;0;

I don't know if this counts since 'free' is no amount of money at all, but I gave away Sherb to an acquaintance on Discord. Which isn't the same as a complete stranger, I suppose, since I'm not sure I would have done that for someone I didn't know at all.
I posted on Nookazon and listed Marshall, requested offers... Only message I got was someone offering 4nmt and 100k bells. They said it was for their younger sister so I kinda felt guilt tripped. Hope it was true, I could've been suckered lol
I’ve only ever gave away villagers. I don’t know what I’d do if I get get any of the new villagers, maybe do a giveaway raffle of sorts? Pick a name out of a hat sort of deal. I’d hate to give them away and the user turn around and sell them for high offsite. It’s tough.
Hopefully who ever you sold her to genuinely wanted her, better to sell low to someone who will give her a loving home than someone looking to make a quick buck.

Yeah, the person I sold Judy to claimed they had a birthday in a few days and it would feel like a present. I was touched, and accepted the 500k bells when I also had an offer for 90 NMT!
I haven't done this personally, but what really irks me is a lot of people I know (and are even friends with) openly boast about "sniping" popular villagers for cheap or even free from a giveaway strictly to resell them for a profit. Something about that just makes me feel really gross inside. Maybe it's because I have such a sentimental attachment to the game, but weird manipulation like that ESPECIALLY with villagers is just... bleh and has made me not consider giving away things for free unless I know the person well enough.

I haven't sold any villagers yet in NH, but knowing I want to let Marina go next, I've been pondering on how I want to handle that. I'm not really looking to turn a huge profit, but I'm also not looking to get scammed by snipers either.

Yup this is the unfortunate consequence of being generous, some people will take anything they can get, even if it means taking it away from someone who actually wants it.
Not only that, in my many giveaways experiences players feel entitled or not grateful? lol you would expect them to be polite and try to come as soon as possible and whatnot. but honestly giveaways are not such a fulfilling experience as you might expect for popular villagers. And I've seen it happen that my giveaways have been resold. lol Now if I want to giveaway a popular villager, I will always make people write me paragraphs why they want it. at least to put in some effort like me for hosting this damn thing.

Back in my New Leaf days, I ran a free cycling town and gave everyone their dreamies for free (including Marshal).
I did sold a villager one time in that game, but that was around the time that game (New Leaf) first came out.
Never again (never really like it)
So if I had Raymond, he's free for a new home to someone who's really looking for him and not trying to sell him off.
Don't get a free villager to only get rid of them again for bells (NMTs for this game)

I don't think I've ever sold/ given away any super popular villagers because the only popular villagers I have ever gotten were ones I wanted, lol. Other villagers, I have always given away, as there always seems to be someone that wants them c:
