When someone sends you home with -

Hey all, I just wondered other people's thoughts on being sent home with - after a trade. It just happened for me and thankfully nothing glitched. I don't believe that it was done maliciously by the other person (all I was doing was dropping off some free hybrids) but it did feel really abrupt and if I am being totally honest, it kind of hurt my feelings.

I understand the benefit of being able to end a session quickly if someone is being a nuisance but are there other benefits?

What are your thoughts? Is it bad form? Totally acceptable? Do you use this instead of waiting for them to exit via the airport?

This happened to me when I was just entering the airport.. I don't see any reason for it, if the person waited like 2 more minutes I would be gone.

it's nothing personal at all, the equivalent was the usual way to end trades in new leaf.

if you leave via the airport the person's gates won't close behind you and they'll have to close them manually, whereas the minus button will both kick you out and close the gates. it's just more convenient overall unless you're allowing several people come and go.

In New Leaf I used this feature a lot, but I always said “tysm” and “I’ll end” before that so that they knew what was happening. It does seem kind of abrupt otherwise, in my opinion.
Because there were some rumors that it could cause problems in NH, I don’t use it these days. I don’t know if this is factual or just rumored.
Edit: I’d keep in mind that typing is a pain in both games though, and some people prefer not to type at all, so that might be why they use - without saying anything.

One time I was doing a catalog trade with someone for a royal crown and when they sent me home it was no longer in my inventory and not on their island. It just voided it completely and then never ended up in their catalog at all.

In this last instance we hadn't even said good bye or anything. If it's a New Leaf habit, I guess I never used it so I didn't know it was a thing.

Personally, I like leaving on my own terms... so I really don't like being 'kicked out' like that, but I try not to think much of it, although, if the person wants me to leave with "-" then I'll do it. I usually try to ask them how they want me to leave, if they prefer the airport or the "-" but I'm not sure if me leaving with "-" will close their gates I just don't like being blindsided like that..

Wait, so it can mess up even if the host ends the session? That's not okay lol. I'd only heard of it being a problem when a visitor uses - to quietly leave. Maybe a lot of people don't know that ending the session as host is harmful too!

I remember people ending the session in NL all the time too, but they'd typically at least say bye before doing so... I never remember running back to Porter, that's for sure. Feels like if this feature wasn't bugged, we'd be ending the session still.

iirc the issue was with people leaving with -, but kicking people out was fine? i might be wrong though

Yeah, this is what I thought... Sometimes people are just doing one trade, and being able to end the session & close your gates simultaneously is really convenient. As long as you, the visitor, don't leave using '-' then I wouldnt worry about it.

IMO it's bad form, although often not intentionally - some people just don't know that there's a (rumored, and albeit likely rare if true) risk of glitches happening. It's also just plain annoying if kicking out/leaving by using the '-' button happens to cause the game to roll back a save, as it will essentially undo the trade and cause you to have to go back and redo it. The majority of the time, I invite people to my island to trade, and specifically ask them to leave through the airport.

I think it’s ok. This was really normal with new leaf and when the game first started everyone was doing it like this as well. After there were a couple of glitches, people started using the airport more. I think people use it to save time. I still get some people who do it and I’m fine with it. I don’t Really see it as rude or ill intent.


A majority of players played new leaf before, and this was the method to go. I fact , having to train out on new leaf was The worst, and time consuming.

Oof, I literally just did this to Jhine7 the other day, I never knew it was like ... a thing people cared about?
My friends always boot becaus it’s just easier and closes your gate so I started doing it too, but I’ll definitely stop doing it when it comes to trades now.

I think it's an old New Leaf habit, everyone ended the sessions because it was faster

(It's been awhile so correct me if I'm wrong) but because you had to add peoples friends codes on the 3DS (no dodo codes back then) you had to reopen the gate every time for the game to recognize the new person you added. And waiting for someone to leave, then close the gate, then reopen it took a good chunk of time.

I think the '-' glitch has scared a lot of people so luckily 99% of my trade people leave through the airport and because the same dodo code works for multiple people there's no reason to close the gate if your're doing lots of trades

Generally, people tend to use this feature when the visitor is far away from the airport. I never do this personally, but have experienced being kicked off whilst typing 'thanks' or running to the airport lol...

this is always how i end the session. it’s not personal at all and i don’t do so without saying “thank you” and “goodbye”, it’s just easier since it closes the gates for me and ends the session without having to go through the whole ordeal of the other person leaving through the airport and then having to close my gates, anyway ;u;

It’s probably because there was a rumour going around that your save file and get wiped out. I’m curious to know if this was ever actually confirmed.

- only results in rollback if someone fails to close a dialogue in time im pretty sure? Though there may be rare occasions otherwise. I don't mind it, I mostly do it to friends who I know don't mind, and rarely do it with visitors.
