It is NOT useless.

It gets your feelings out, which is better than not crying, because if you don't, you get even more sad.

Now, some of you who don't think about others' feelings might say that spilt milk is a little problem.
Have you ever thought that some people have different opinions than yours?
You might value a random dying old woman more than a random dying kitten, but others might think different.

There is nothing wrong with having feelings that you may not have in certain situations.

There are people who value ice cream more than you would value life, but they value life even more than that.

And don't try to make them more "mature" by changing their opinions that matter to them.

Another thing, why do people get angry at people that do have those opinions? I might as well get angry at you crying over a broken arm. What does having those opinions do to those people? You can cry over your garden dying, I wouldn't care, might even be sympathetic. Crying over so-called "little" things does not negatively affect others around them, so no need to get angry at them.

I had to rant.
And yes, you may debate.

I don't quite understand some of the analogies you made, but I can see some sort of point because I hate that phrase.

i think the point that's made with that saying is "don't waste time crying over little things."

sure, it's okay to be upset when you spill milk, but you don't need to sit there and bawwww your life away. clean it up and move on.

spilt milk is a extremely small thing, so you shouldn't go comparing it to larger things (like loved ones dying) or else it won't be valid and you'll just end up more confused than you normally are.

tl;dr, it means don't waste your time crying over small things.
big things are okay, like burning the house down because you spilt milk, but still, it isn't going to change it and in the end it's only time wasted if you do it too much.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Crying =/= crying over things that can't be changed.

Spilt milk implies something that cannot be changed.

If things cannot be changed, there is no use in lamenting over them.

Hence: "There's no use in crying over spilt milk".

The word "crying" is used figuratively, not literally... nothing to debate here.

:/
so there's no use crying over someone dying, just because it can't be changed?
of course here's a use in crying as nook has pointed out (it lets out your emotions if you need them to be let out), but doing too much of it and wasting your life by doing so is the problem.

That's exactly what I meant in the post you quoted. Let me put it this way. Of course you're going to cry over someone dying. You're going to remember them for the rest of your life. But there's a difference between that, and this:

What I mean is, I'm pretty sure that "crying over spilled milk" is referring to obsessing over something that can't be changed. Sorry I didn't make that clear initially.
