What do you think about the new Barbies?

This is all well and good, but when are they going to release Barbie dolls that transform into dinosaurs and cars?


Fashion icon by day, vicious flesh eating prehistoric carnivore by night...Or herbivore, because the kids need that choice.

I think it's great. As a kid I only had the same barbies, the only difference was the hair color. It was really boring to look at.

to be honest i don't think it's necessary and i don't really know how i feel about it
i feel like barbie is a classic brand that shouldn't be messed around with, like i get that brands evolve and stuff but they're just doing this for the sake of being politically correct which is lame

the whole argument that barbies are to blame for eating disorders and negative body image in young girls is absolute bull if you ask me, and i'm saying that as somebody who had an eating disorder all throughout my adolescence like i just think that whole concept just completely and absolutely trivialises eating disorders and puts them in the 'stupid shallow impressionable teenage girl box', as if they're not far more complex than looking at an obviously unrealistic plastic doll and thinking 'wow i wish i looked like that???'

i guess it's more inclusive which is cool whatever but they're doing it for the wrong reasons

Also why would anyone want to look and have a body "just like Barbie"? Barbie's ugly if you ask me.

i think barbie's gorgeous and i grew up idolising her for what she was - a doll
kids aren't given enough credit, they're not absolute idiots
nobody's going to develop body dysmorphia and start skipping meals because they don't have the same measurements as a barbie doll

I never said she causes eating disorders. I'm all for Barbie and think she's kickass but to deny she's contributed to making a few kids go "Huh I wanna look like that" is a bit of a stretch if you ask me.

Anywho I don't see why people are bitter about the new dolls when only good things can come out of it if anything, even if it is "just to be PC" or whatever

I think it's pretty stupid that it took them this long, plenty of other lesser known companies did it first and now they're jumping on the band wagon which is really stupid. It's nice that kids will feel less different but it's hardly a difference in the body types, like one is slightly shorter and hardly what would be like a size 12 IRL and she's the "curvy" one, and then there is one even more statuesque who is taller and thus thinner, so I mean, yeah super neat-o. Good job.

I think this a great idea, because now little girls won't think that they have to look like the original Barbie to be beautiful. Once they see this Barbie's in different body types they may think 'oh well this is normal and she's just as pretty as the blonde Barbie'. I remember when I was younger and used to play with dolls I used to want to look like Barbie because I thought that was pretty. I always wanted to be taller because I thought that was considered beautiful, I always wanted to have a flat stomach and a tiny frame because I thought that was beautiful. Now that they introduced these new dolls little girls might think that these are just as beautiful as the blonde barbie, and that makes me really happy.

I think they're great. although numbers of young children playing with barbies has significantly declined, it is still a reasonable impact on beauty standards for young males and females. however since most media influence comes from the internet for current generations, the new barbies are only the first few stepping stones in creating a realistic, healthy, and positive body standard for the younger generation of today.

I don't think making barbies with different body types will make a difference in how kids view themselves. If parents spent more time telling their children they're beautiful, however, I think it would actually make a difference. Confidence stems from the people you value in life valuing you, too. Not that every kid that ever felt bad about themselves had terrible parents; I just feel like if parents took more time to try and boost their kids' confidence, we wouldn't need barbies with different body types and terms like "fat shaming", and your appearance in general wouldn't matter as much.

I agree. it's somewhere to start, but primary socialisation sources like parental figures tend to have more of an impact than the media and secondary socialisation.

I don't think anybody is implying that. I think the idea is that girls play with these dolls that are more or less just skinny white and blonde. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it I can easily see how it at a young age one might think think it is the 'norm' because other skin colors/body types,etc aren't fully represented. And very simply, girls might just want a doll they feel they can identify with a little more.

I definitely love that they have a more diverse set of body types, children can finally get a doll that's similar to them, and the various skin tones and hair styles also make it even better
