It's been pretty quiet at TBT lately. Do you think the big ACNH update in January will bring a lot of people back, or maybe some new people will find TBT? What happened for the last big ACNH update a few years ago?

Yes, I think we’ll get a bit more lively, but I don’t think it will be nearly as much as some think.
I wasn’t around for the peak of this site but I have a hard time believing the game will get as big as it was during the pandemic.

I hope with the new update and when more announcements are made that members who are still active here will tell others who have left and hopefully they will come back. Maybe some still pop in and out. When I took a break I was still visiting the site, I needed a break from posting.

The problem with it releasing when it did was that it burned so hot and died out so quickly. I hope the next game whenever it may be or even this update will bring forth a longer term activity.

I hope so. I miss the people I connected with who no longer use the forum. I understand people have lives outside the Internet, but it feels weird.
Maybe Animal Crossing isn’t as popular as it used to be, but it’s still going strong— at least with me.
I’m glad to meet new members, too, though.

TBT is going through a cultural reset, IMO. The last year was really tough socially. No events being hosted on the forum have also taken a toll.
The "heart and soul" of the forum was centered around collectibles to some degree, but the drama surrounding them got a little out of control.
I wonder if the collectibles system should be revamped. It attracted people to the site and added a component that is fun, but I wonder if there is a way to make getting collectibles less competitive and more community oriented?

Yes I think the update will get some people back but I don’t think TBT will be what it once was, people have generally moved on from forums sadly

I'm not really sure, maybe, maybe not. A lot of people left the forums this year because of the uhhh feedback thread and everything regarding it and I don't know what it will take to ever bring these people back if they even want to come back at all. The update might spark a new desire for some people to start playing ACNH again(or more than ever before) but I don't know how many people this is gonna affect.

And just like with the 2.0 update, the 3.0 update will bring the forums as a utopia. Though, as time goes on, the update hype will die and the activity will start to dwindle overtime.
It's been that way with basically every game, it's just a natural feeling we all get. But we do return to things at some point when we desire it most.

I'd imagine people will rejoin or new people will join when the 3.0 update is here. The forums will be active for a few months most likely before dying down once again until we get news and then the release of the next Animal Crossing game, whenever that happens.

I agree that it won't be as much as we would think. I thought the Happy Home Paradise would have a bit more lifetime to it. It did not.

To be fair HHP costed money and was basically just a fancy port of a 3DS game. I imagine that it didn’t appeal to many more casual players very much, but I think that a free major update might, at least a little.
Ngl, I was here for the peak of this website, I was 12/13/14 at the time. I wish it could be like that again. There was sometimes like 500-700 people online at once, but everyone has gone to discord to nookazon. (Personally, I despise it, but I'm autistic and hate change, I got banned there for talking about this forum actually lmfao.) I mean the people who are active here can spread the word of the forum on twitter, bluesky.. YouTube videos... This forum was my escape from reality when I was in middle and high school, a place where I had friends. I mean i did get trolled sum cuz i was a kid, but lol. There is a whole new generation of players and teens, forum culture is kind of dead. The previous generations that grew up with this kind of culture are between 25-35 now and they more than likely have kids and busy lives now, I mean I'm a mother I hardly have time for games or to be online active anywhere. + I mean you can literally google websites to discords to join. But 2000's culture is now mainstream again, I really think advertisement could bring this place back! I found this website in 2013 because I googled animal crossing online friends, and this was the first thing that popped up.

I've been on a semi-hiatus from this site for quite a while now. I like contributing to threads other people make and there just aren't many new ones anymore, so I don't post much. I wasn't here during the peak of the New Leaf era, but I did see the rise in activity during New Horizon's release. The site has been losing activity for quite some time and the drama last year sped that up. I get sad whenever I log in and barely see anything new.
The human internet in general is losing traction. I moderate a small Pokémon forum (which I won't name since I'm not intending to advertise it) and the ratio of bots that try to join versus actual people is like 50:1 nowadays. The bulk of my work as a forum moderator now is just filtering out bots and letting the occasional real person join. I imagine it's the same here. There's so many articles and posts online where people describe using the internet less just because they're tired of the AI slop.
Having a forum account is also a commitment and requires more effort than occasionally posting on social media. Forum posts are usually expected to be longer than social media posts and you have to learn how to navigate what to many are confusing website layouts (the core of forum design hasn't changed in many years). They're seen as a relic of the old internet and I have to wonder how many younger people even know what they are.
Then there's the fact the Animal Crossing series has had little new content in years. Nintendo fumbled New Horizons by giving it little content on launch, rarely giving the game any meaningful updates, and ending support weirdly quick despite the record breaking sales. Only now, nearly six years after launch, are they giving it a patch to improve performance on the Nintendo Switch 2. There just wasn't enough to keep people invested in the game long term, so there was less reason for people to post about it on this site. The majority of people who stuck around long term like me are just attached to the site itself, even if I have some painful memories of my immature behavior when I was younger.
I'm not entirely sure if this site will last much longer. There aren't many of us left and on-site events are getting rare. The only thing I think can save it is a new Animal Crossing game that'll attract new users, which I don't expect to release until at least next year. That and the possibility of some people joining because they want a space online free of bots since this forum, and other forums like it, put an active effort to keep AI bots from posting. Even then I don't know if it's enough to bring activity anywhere near the highs of mid 2020.
