I love their house interiors and don’t want the villagers to mess them up too badly so I’ve only been gifting non-native fruit and door wreaths. Any other ideas? I’m worried if I gift them furniture they will get rid of a default furniture and I’ll never be able to help them fix it.
Yeah, I've been gifting them the same things: foreign fruit and door decorations. I feel bad because they always give me such nice presents, and I give them such basic things!
I do give my first five villagers (who have basic houses), actual furniture, though. I figure anything I give them can only be an improvement over their wooden block furniture!
I gift my fav villagers clothing. Rayomd wears a sparkly teal jacket and filbert wears a golden poop hat lolol. Winnie has a cute bow bowler hat and heart apron
I love giving them accessories and clothes to wear!
Flurry has loved every clothing piece and accessory I've given her and she occasionally switches from wearing stuff I gave her and her default clothes! Same with Bruce who is currently wearing a fancy waistcoat lol
Genji wears the stuff I've given him too but he refused to wear two accessories that I've given him (he kept them in his room for a while though!)

Have you tried giving them any accessories yet? I love when my villagers wear the glasses and bows I've given them!
I tried giving Genji a rounded beard but he refused to wear it lol
If you give them clothes and accessories, do they display them in their houses like in NL and WW?
I would looove to give my villagers things so they can dress up, but I don't want to mess up their houses. I remember in New Leaf I gave Tangy a couple shirts, and she loved them so much she wouldn't stop displaying them no matter how much actual furniture I gave her.

I was giving them clothing til I saw they would put the items they weren’t wearing in their house on mannequins. I’m worried like in past games that they’ll start pushing out their furniture in favor of clothes/fish/accessories/bugs. Is there something that stops that now?

Don't quote me on this but I think they swap things out often rather than get rid of things? For example, I've given Flurry at least 4 different clothing/accessories except I'll only see one on display in her house. And for furniture items or bugs/fish will only fill on top of her desk (she will not add more than two of those). <- for this I think she only removed her stack of books but idk if she actually got rid of it since they are able to switch out furniture now (replacing a desk with a workbench for example)
Flurry is in a basic home but Bruce, who isn't, SO FAR seems to have the same pattern

ooh I hope we get confirmation on them only swapping out the same spots. I was testing gifts on my starter uchi and walked into her house only to see two mannequin heads with different sunglasses I’d gifted her, which is when i ceased all placeable item gifting. If they only use specific areas and don’t get rid of furniture I might start gifting more interesting things again

Since the starter's have limited furniture and the AI is weird, they do tend to get rid of things they probably should've kept :\
But I think for the rest, as long as it's a "misc" item/small creature rather than a "houseware" item, they won't replace big things (ex: coffee cup vs. closet, coffee cup will just be put on a table and might replace what is on the table)
Idk how items hung on the wall affect their homes though
Clothes that I think will look good on them, that they end up wearing for literally an hour then either never wear them or throw it in their house, making it look really out of place. Otherwise, furniture that I think would match their decor.

I gift them furniture routinely. Interestingly, I've only seen two pieces of furniture I gifted added to their homes: A bed for Reneigh and a kettlebell for tank.
the good plates I gave Ankha didn't appear, though that's probably because she already had some. Also the go board I gave to Reneigh has made no appearance for unknown reasons
Giant clams, conches, and coral, from preferred to least preferred.
I was giving them foreign fruit initially, but they typically give me more for these shells.
There's a possibility of fixing the 5 starter houses if we know which furniture items/flooring/wallpaper they should have, right?
I mean, it's gonna take a while, but if you give them the items, they may end up decorating their homes in a way that's close enough to how they should be in the first place... (At least in theory that makes sense)
