So I've been visiting a lot of dream towns lately, and there have been a few things that keep showing up and bothering the crap out of me:

1) Underdone towns: This is an obvious one, but when you just go to a random town and it's some kid who played the game once, has garbage everywhere and a town name like "JustinRulz" or something

2) Overdone towns: I appreciate that it takes forever to lay tiles and flowers on every inch of the ground but honestly it just makes me dizzy sometimes.

3) Crowded towns: I get claustrophobic when someone makes all their paths 1 tile wide surrounded by trees. Please give me some space.

4) Impractical houses: People need beds and toilets, not 16 1up mushrooms

5) Pretentious towns: Don't get me wrong, I love a theme, but this is a children's game not your magnum opus.

Phew. Sorry for the rant. Do you have anything that really annoys you in dream towns?

The above drives me spanky. I heartily wish you could apply some kind of parameter when you're talking to Luna so that she only takes you to recently-updated towns. I stopped doing random visits because of all the underdone towns and now try to work my way through lists of recommended dream towns.

Funny you should mention crowded towns. Just today I started taking out a bunch of trees and bushes in my own town because it's like living in a giant *ker-SNEEZE* of shrubbery. I have a background in urban planning but can't deco my town to save my life.

As for impractical houses, I kinda love 'em. Finding toilets disappoints me...but now I kinda wanna see a toilet shrine room, lined with urinals.

Other things:
It's not so much annoying as it makes me sad when I visit a town and all the human characters say "Thanks!" It's so much nicer when someone's taken the time to give them a greeting or a statement.

PITFALL SEEDS.

Empty houses.

The same villagers over and over, town after town. (This one doesn't really seem fair, since people will like who they like.)

I'd be interested to visit your dream town now! :D

The ultimate irony of this thread - my town is pretty new and so much worse than the ones I'm complaining about :P

Not entirely true, I think it's fair to say it's a step above JustinRulz.

I have seen some spectacular bathrooms in dream towns. The Manneken Pis is just so full of potential.

I dunno. I don't visit many dream towns. I do get a little annoyed when I see the popular villagers again and again :v
but you know, taste is taste. it just gets a little boring.
too many wrapped items bothers me too. I mean, gifts are neat... but it is just sorta annoying when there's lots and they're just all wrapped. >: I don't plan on wrapping most of the items I'd like to leave out for people.
otherwise, eh. I'd like to know of/see other relaxed towns, I've only been to fancy ones. my town's really relaxed, and it makes me feel sad because I feel like I'm the only one with a town like that.
it's really bare still, and I only made my dream address solely because I didn't wanna wait, since I was editing my signature.

I usually don't get too mad when people's houses are underdone because I know it's harder to come by furniture and stuff than it is to get flowers and foliage. I usually don't like towns that have disorganized paths. Like paths that from the way they're surrounded by trees and bushes like block you off and lead to no where. It's like I can see the plaza, how do I get there?!
It's not something that I guess super bothers me, but just makes me a little sad is when people don't leave me presents to play with when I go to their town. Leave me some ice cream or another outfit to wear.
One thing I'm just picky about as well is flowers. I like when flowers are neat and kind of coordinated. Or at least when they look like the person actually put thought into how they are placed rather than just "I'm gonna dump all these over here cause flowers" I think it adds something extra if a person has taken the time to coordinate their flowers and make them look all neat and nice. I usually never let Luna pick the town though. If I'm dreaming of a town it's one I've found online and usually seen screencaps of. Tumblr has tons of well-done towns if you go looking.

I hate it when people have houses full of Nintendo fortune cookie items. They're all so... random! ;)

You know what, I feel kind of bad being a jerk about other people's towns and not putting mine out there so here's my DA:

At the very least it'll be fodder for you guys to come up with more pet peeves :P
Not finished at all but meh

Thanks for making this thread--- I'm working on my town and these are good tips for what not to do! ;)

I have never gone to a dream town that really bothered me. I guess that's not entirely true. I get annoyed when bushes are planted between trees and you can't seem to get around them. Pitfall seeds are a bit annoying as well.

I do love a dream town that decorates their houses really unique. I could care less if the houses have all the things that a real house has ( bathroom, kitchen, etc. ) It's a game and I love when people think outside the box. We already live in normal houses. Why not create a room that you could never really have in real life ? I also like seeing fun patterns refurbished on the furniture.Themes are always fun too.

BUSHES. BLOCKING. EVERY. FREAKING. SPACE. BETWEEN. THINGS. SERIOUSLY.

I like bushes to, but I don't just want to stay on paths to explore.

Yeah I know what you mean. I got that the other day, succumbed to an attack of immaturity and spent half an hour re-organising my basement so I could put it in front of my toilet.

glitchy towns, can't take glitchy towns.... grrrrr

Don't know why it makes me feel very unsettled when I see bamboo in rivers and trees where I know they shouldn't grow. I feel sad for the poor villagers living there. They should be some kind of warning, like 'this player has tampered with the game, enter at your own risk'.

Yes, the mario stuff is cool, but it seems that a lot of people just shove them in a room. I recently made a mario bedroom and I used other pieces and made mario patterns for them. I think it turned out pretty cool, though.

Usually, paths that are more than 3 tiles wide really irk me... Or when the tiles hang over cliffs, ponds, and rivers.

For #1 ~ except for a few times, I always just search by region; but, I don't often go visiting dream towns. The first one I picked I still think is one of the best ones, if not the best one I have seen yet. I pick towns by names that sound like an actual name of a place (or that is an actual name of a place); I skip by the ones like Hogwarts. I mean, you never know; some of those might be really awesome towns. My town is named after a place in Dragon Age: Inquisition, but then, when you come visit it :/; I guess it'd be one I'd skip (I did visit someone else's Dragon Age inspired town, but I found it on the person's blog; and it was pretty nice).

#2 ~ Yeah, I think that makes me feel that way too (and sorry if anyone, who visited my town; got that feeling from seeing all of those flowers clumped up).

#4 ~ Some rooms I couldn't get into because it was all Nintendo items, taking up every inch of the room. <.< So, yeah, I hear you on this one.

#5 ~ I don't know what you mean; how people make the game into their magnum opus. Could you maybe give me an example (screenshots? or explanation)?

Not being able to walk through a town without getting stuck in a forest of trees and bushes is my only pet peeve.

Whenever I ask Luna to pick a town, it's always a brandy new town with pretty much nothing good. I hate it when people upload as soon as the get the Dream Suite and there's nothing interesting to see at all.
This is more of a general home pet peeve, but I hate homes just filled with Nintendo items. Also over crowded homes. Back in my first town every room was pretty much crowded to the max with...gyroids. Back then I didn't really care about how I decorated I just wanted to make the HHA happy. One day I decided "screw this" and cleaned out my rooms and made them to my liking, I don't regret anything. Plus I got bucks for the gyroids!

I also kinda dislike hacked towns. They can be fun, but I just wish everyone would play normally. Of course everyone will do what they want.

*I will not go any further into hacking*

-one tile paths do seem too crowded
-unoriginal houses with just one set in each room are boring
-so are rooms with junk everywhere
-there is such a thing as too cute
-too many things to walk into to the point where it feels like a maze
-tiles flying off cliff and river edges
-when PWPs look off position (putting an arch in front of a 2 space wide bridge)

I'm also curious on what you mean by a pretentious town OP.

Also when the characters don't have thought out greetings. I know some people who plot reset make a fourth character, update, then delete it. I understand that they don't make a greeting for them. But the mayor just making a face in the greeting like (^.^)~ kinda bugs me. I like it when they say something that relates to their personality or something to do with the kind of house they have, like for example if you made a characters home into a bakery, you could have them say "Welcome to (town name)'s Bakery!" Or "What kind of cake would you like?" Or something like that. I hate when characters that have been there for a long time just say thanks, hi, or : ).

Oh and copy towns. I know of these two amazing towns. But for some reason, people are trying to copy them. Someone went out of their way to rest for MONTHS trying to find an exact map matching the one used in One town. Hacking wasn't a thing yet, so this person was really desperate for whatever reason. Every inch of the towns was identical: flowers, paths, buildings... And two towns are seemingly trying to copy The other, which I found by looking by town name. Both of them have almost no furniture in their homes for some reason.
And someone gots lots of hate because someone made a messed up version of their town and it wasn't even their fault.

Overly hacked towns. There's a reason trees need to be a space apart. That squished together thing is completely distracting. As well as when they're hanging over cliffs, etc. And I utterly hate the way it looks when the dirt under the plaza and on the beach ramps has been overrode to match the grass.

Single-tile paths can be useful in tight places, even throughout a town. But please, do not line them completely with trees and bushes. I can't see where I'm going and constantly bumping into stuff is annoying. It's nice to have natural, winding paths, but only when you can appreciate them.
