ok, new update today! swimming yeey!
but really, why? nintendo? -_-

So the new update includes wetsuits. you can put them on and go swimming! and you have to put one on to go swimming. no swimming in normal clothes!
so in a way, the wetsuit functions like a tool. you put it on and you can press A at the water to dive in. nice!
only,it doesn't work like any other tool.
  • first of all, you cannot equip it if you have a wand outfit on. because it's a piece of clothing ... and they couldn't do the same thing they did with the helmet for some reason?
  • also, since it's a piece of clothing, it disappears from your inventory when you equip it. the only way to unequip it is to go into the clothing menu and remove it, or to put a different piece of clothing on
  • but that doesn't mean the clothing you had on is now in your inventory. no. you have both equipped! so to swap you need a separate set of clothes!
  • not to mention that the suit only replaces tops and bottoms. socks, shoes, bag and any headwear you have on have to be unequipped separately if you want to swim without them!
  • on top of that, you cannot make a swimsuit part of a wand outfit! you have to carry it with you if you want to go swimming.
  • and if you want to store them because you don't want to carry a swimsuit all the time, be prepared to scroll all the way down in your list of clothes because they're all the way at the bottom below the umbrellas!
like, is there any way nintendo could have made using a swimsuit any less convenient?
or am I missing something obvious that makes all this ok?

I think for most New Leaf players it’ll feel pretty intuitive since that’s exactly how they were before (minus the wand outfit stuff, because New Leaf didn’t have wands or wand outfits). Still, it’s definitely annoying. I’ll probably try to find a place to display it on the beach for convenience reasons.

The only thing i have against the wetsuit is the fact that i cant set it as a wand outfit, everything else im not really too upset about. It was the same in new leaf, right?
Its a tad inconvenient, yes, but not as inconvenient as having to press bulk buy like 10 times because i want a lot of customization kits lol. Ill happily live with it

I didn't play enough of new leaf, so i don't know how it functioned there.
the fact that they already had the same system in new leaf and decided not to improve on it doesn't really help
sure there are other inconvenient things. that doesn't change the fact that they could have done this differently

I think for those who played new leaf its less inconvenient since we're already used to it, so i can definitely understand why you're frustrated. Again, just personally, im much more annoyed about other things they havent fixed which are insanely inconvenient

I wonder if they intend to sell things like flippers in Abels so they allowed some items to be worn while swimming. If they don't do extra swimming accessories it makes no sense though.

I think this is the reason they allow you to wear shoes, socks, bags and headwear.
you also get a snorkeling mask

I thought in New Leaf if you put the wetsuit on, you only wore the wetsuit. I thought it instantly removed your accessories/shoes until you took it off again? My memory could be foggy though, as I haven't played New Leaf this year I don't think.

Nah you could swim with shoes. I remember because they did it in the trailer and I hated it lol

There are reasons why. While it is considered clothing, the wetsuit acts technically like a tool in this game.

It's like a switch. When worn, it clears up invisible walls which enables swimming from the shore or clifftop diving, which are normally blocked.

Part of me feels like for the conflict with the wand and wet suit, is that they're both tools. So, the code calls on the wand to pull saved outfits from the closet for you to instantly equip. While the wet suit, "flattens" torso and bottom clothing and allows the character to swim. Maybe stacking the two types of code is really difficult to make it both work? Idk. I'm not a programmer.

I like that it disappears from your inventory though. It doesn't take a spot away and it easily overlays onto your original clothing. I would kind of be mad if my clothes got pushed into my inventory if I equipped the wet suit. I wear a lot of accessories.

I went swimming with my hat on. And then I just kept my socks and shoes on. I dunno, it doesn't really bother me to go swimming in accessories.

Also when accessing things in your storage you can organize your closet by type, alphabetically, time and something else. I usually pick type or alphabetically.

You cant set the wetsuit as a wand-outfit, but you can wear a wand outfit over a wetsuit (so basically the inverse). So if you want to switch quickly between swimgear and normal clothes, equip the wetsuit, then put a wand-outfit on. If you want to swim, simply change out of the wand outfit.

I don’t mind most of these things but i do wish we could design our own wetsuits since you can design basically every other type of dress in the pro designs (if that makes sense)? I guess those expectations are a bit too high, though it would’ve been a cool feature.

I loved wearinng the wetsuits in New Leaf and adding accessories like the Captain's hat to feel like a pirate lmao. I'm not really bothered by the mechanics, but I see the struggle

I think no matter what Nintendo do or how many little details they change. There’s ALWAYS going to be threads like this because there will always be something that should have been different.

The wetsuit is essentially a tool, you can’t add shovels to wand outfits.
I don’t really care if I’m swimming with shoes etc on, plus there’s water shoes right? They make sense!
The storage situation is annoying but again it’s a tool right, so it’s where the tools are I think? Tbh i think I’ll have an area on the beach where I leave a wetsuit

it’s the same deal as NL so I’m not too surprised. I don’t think I’m going to be swimming that much anyway. Not too interested in it once the novelty wears off!

I think its a great addition and it literally barely takes a few seconds to put it on or take it off.

It looked kinda weird still wearing a cowboyhat while diving but hey, whatever.
