Yeah it's fantastic. I know I'm jumping the bandwagon here but the bandwagon exists for a reason, right? There are two seasons of an anime adaptation. I highly recommend watching the series

Many different choices, obvious changes in the story depending on your choices (AHEM.... Looking at you GoT game...)
Interesting story, or as said, many choices to help build an interesting story.

Steins;Gate, Higurashi, Fate/Stay Night, Dangan Ronpa series, 1bitHeart, 999 (9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors) and it's sequel Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward.

Those are ones I can think of atm that aren't otoge, BLs and what not coughs

Juniper's Knot is one of the most beautiful visual novels I've ever read. I believe it's free.

999 is great as well. Haven't played ZR: VLR yet though.

If you want one with female MC and romance, then I'd recommend dating sim or romance games like:
- Hakuouki (Available on most platforms iirc)
- Sweet Fuse (PSP)
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side series (NDS & PSP)
- The Second Reproduction (PC)

And some upcoming games:

VNs with female protags are:

Doesn't have a female protag but worth your time:
