Villager Species Tier List.

I judged each design on the animal design itself, not my bias of how many of each I liked. Otherwise, alligator would be "Best Design"
I'll go over the best and worst ones according to how I ranked them.

Best Designs
Cat: Cats are clean cut. There really isn't a cat that I dislike.
Deer: Deer are straight forward. If I find it hard to dislike any its because I think the animal design is good. Even Fuchsia my least favourite deer is better than most Mice villagers
Horse: Its remarkable that they could do horses so well.
Octopus: Remarkable that they could get octopus villagers to walk. Very creative. Again, I judge based on how well the animal design is implemented. If they can get an octopus to walk, then they could get a shark or snake to walk.
Ostrich: I like most ostrich villagers. The design can extend to other birds of different species which can add a lot of variety.
Wolf: Literal perfection. Wolves are more canine than Dog villagers. I seriously wished Dog designs were more varied.

"Kill it With Fire" Designs

Hippo: Its the teeth. The wide gaping teeth.

Pigs: I just hate pigs. Its the chubby design of pigs that make me uncomfortable. To each their own though. I can see why other would like this design.

Mice: Mice aren't in this category but should be mentioned. Its the ears. The ears are too Mickey Mouse and not very realistic. If they could shrink the ears maybe that design could be improved.

Finally got around to doing this. Moved the tiers around a bit, but here's what I came up with:

S tier (Love/like all/most):
- Ostriches are overall my favorite species. I LOVE how creative they get with them. The only one I dislike is Sandy and that's the only thing keeping me from making my second island an all-ostrich island at some point. Blanche, Julia, Flora, Sprocket, and Phoebe are villagers that I absolutely love, and all the other non-Sandy ones are pretty awesome too. Hoping Rio or Nindori comes back so I can use one of them instead of Sandy.
- Dogs. I was kind of surprised that I put dogs so high. The only dogs I'm really not into are Mac, Marcel, and maybe Benjamin. Goldie is one of my favorite villagers of all time and I also adore Biskit, Bones, Butch, Daisy, Portia, Maddie, Shep, and the list goes on. Overall a pretty great group.
- Cats are probably a top 3 species overall, and even though there are a few cat villagers I don't like and one (Raymond) I LOATHE entirely, the good really outweighs the bad. Two of my top ten villagers of all time, Kiki (my absolute #1 villager of all time) and Tangy, are cats. There's also Lolly, Rudy, Katt, Tabby, Bob, Felicity, Merry, etc. There's so much excellence here than I can overlook the low points (Raymond)
- Squirrels were another surprise for me. Of course, Sylvana is one of my favorite villagers, but there's a lot of other great ones here too. Caroline, Blaire, Filbert, Poppy, Hazel, and Mint are all great as well. Marshal is here too, and while he's not my personal taste, I can admit he's adorable. I'm not huge on Agent S, Ricky, or Sheldon, but like with the cats, there's just so much good here I couldn't justify putting them any lower.
- Ducks. This one kind of surprised me. Quillson is....there, but I like pretty much all of the other ducks. Bill, Molly, and Ketchup are my favorites, but I also love Deena for being one of my first six ACGC villagers back in 2002. Not to mention Weber, Drake, and even the snooty M ducks that a lot of people seem to dislike - Mallary, Miranda, and Maelle. Aside from Quillson, I'd say maybe Gloria and Derwin aren't my cup of tea, but they really aren't that bad.


A tier (Love a few, mostly indifferent to the rest):
- Horses: I love a lot of the horses - Julian, Annalise, Cleo, Savannah, Papi, Winnie... I'm not huge on Clyde or Peaches but I wouldn't say I hate them. Overall, A tier ended up being the villagers where I love/like quite a few but just not as much as S tier.
- Wolves are probably the species that defines this tier. I like Skye, Vivian, Kyle, Audie, and I LOVE Dobie, but most of the other ones are "just there" for me, but there's not a single one I dislike. My least favorite is probably Chief, but I still think he's pretty cool.
- Deer is pretty much a species with some AMAZING good villagers and a few villagers that are just blah. I adore Diana, Fauna, Bruce, Erik, and Zell and am indifferent to most of the other ones. I do have a clear cut least favorite (Bam) and his presence does drag the species down a little. I almost put deer in S tier, but between how much I dislike Bam and how much I dislike Chelsea, I couldn't justify it.
- Octopus: I honestly didn't know what to do with this one, since there's only 3. When it comes to the octopi, there's one I LOVE (Octavian), one that I like (Marina), and one I dislike (Zucker). I ended up sticking them in A tier, since I DO really like 2/3 of them.
- Rabbits! Similar to the deer, this is a species with some AMAZING villagers and a few that are just blah. I adore Pippy, Carmen, Dotty, Cole, Coco, and O'Hare. I also think Toby is the best of the Sanrio villagers. However, there are a few that I just dislike so much (Chrissy, Francine, Tiffany, and Genji, that, like with the deer, I can't justify putting them in S tier.
- Frogs. Originally I had frogs in B tier, but decided to move them up, because, while the bad ones are...bad (looking at you Jambette, Gigi, and Diva.) the good villagers more than make up for it. Ribbot is my number two favorite villager of all time. I've also grown to love Lily a lot recently. There's also Tad, Raddle, Henry, and Puddles, who are all great. The frogs also have two of my favorite"missing" villagers, being Sunny and Emerald.
- Bear cubs: Similar to rabbits and deer, there are just too many bad eggs here to justify S tier for me. I love June, Olive, Cheri, Stitches, Bluebear, and Maple. I'd love to have Murphy and Bluebear on one of my islands at some point as well. On the other hand, we have...Vladimir, Tammy, and Kody. (I kinda find Barold cute, not gonna lie)
- Pigs: this was another surprise, but with the pigs, I feel like their good villagers are AMAZING, while their bad villagers are just...awful. Pigs are my favorite animal IRL, so I'm a bit biased, but I love Agnes, Gala, and Hugh. I also quite like Boris, Rasher, Maggie, Lucy, and Pigleg, may he rest in peace. The thing with the pigs though, is that my least favorite,, most despised, demon monster, least favorite villager is a pig. I hate you, Truffles. Not too fond of Cobb, Chops, or Curly either.

B tier (About half are cool, the other half are not):
From here on, the tiers are pretty self explanatory, so I won't be providing too much explanation.
- Rhinoes: Love Merengue, Hornsby, and Tank.
- Elephants: Love Tia, Tucker, Ellie, Eloise, and Big Top. Not too into the rest.
- Goats: Pashmina is a queen. Sherb is adorable. Nan is cute. Chevre's okay. Then there's Velma and Gruff...
- Tigers: Like Bianca and Bangle. Can't stand Claudia or Rowan.
- Sheep: Cashmere is pretty much the lone atrocity here, but I'm not too into Pietro, Dom, Curlos, or Timbra either. Stella is by far my favorite, but I also like Etoile and Willow. The others are just there.
- Eagles: I adore Apollo, and most of the other ones are acceptable. Not that into Sterling, Keaton, or Celia, but I don't despise any of them. Probably the most "meh" species for me overall.
- Penguins: We've got Wade, Roald, Sprinkle, Aurora, and Flo here that I like, but similar to the eagles, most of the rest are just "meh" - but I dislike Iggly, Tex, and Gwen.

C tier (A few are OK, but I'm not into most of them.):
- Monkeys: I like Shari, Nana, and Deli. No thanks to the rest.
- Alligators: Gayle and Drago are pretty cool. The others not so much, particularly Alli and Del.
- Chickens: The chickens are just so "blah" to me. Ava is cute, and Egbert amuses me, but other than that, I'm not a fan.
- Mice: Thought these dudes would end up at the bottom, but there are actually six mice I like: Dora, Rod, Samson, Chadder, Broccolo, and Bree. Then we've got Moose the creep, Bella the nightmare, Candi's weird red..whatever they are, and Rizzo the weird ninja on the other side of the coin.
- Koalas: I love koalas IRL, but the ones in Animal Crossing just don't do it for me. I like Ozzie, Melba, and Alice. Lyman and Sydney are...okay, but I don't like any of the others.
- Birds: Piper, Robin, Midge, and Jay are cool. Jitters, Anchovy, Admiral, Lucha, Sparro, Twiggy, and Peck are not.
- Bears: Originally I thought I only liked Grizzly. But looking at them, Megan, Curt, Ike, and Teddy aren't bad, and I really hope they bring Dozer back. I can't stand Tutu, Chow, Paula, Nate, or Ursala, however.

D tier (I literally only like one):
- Bulls: Rodeo is cool.
- Hamsters: I like Hamlet.
- Kangaroos: I like Walt.
- Anteaters: I like Antonio.
- Cows: I like Tipper.

F tier (They're all terrible):
Gorillas, Hippos, and Lions are by far my three least favorite species in the game. There's not a single gorilla I like. Bertha is kinda cute for a hippo, but I still probably wouldn't invite her to my island. And the lions are just boring.

Top tier: Wolves are definitely my favorite species in the game. They're all so adorable <3
Cats are amazing. All of them are precious. Bear cubs are so much better than the bears. Octopi are just precious. Especially Zucker, my boy. <3 Frogs are amazing, except Croque lol.

Second-tier: Goats are cute. Dogs are pretty cute. Some are weird, though. Deer have a special place in my heart, but not special enough for the top tier. Bunnies are cute. Ducks are adorable, some creepy looking though. Sheep are ok, Muffy puts the Sheep in 2nd. Lions are saved by Leopold. He's my second favorite villager.

3rd tier: Eagles are ok, Apollo is the only one I like. Penguins are cute enough, they're in the third tier because of Wade. Horses are decent. Rhinos are only good because of Merengue and Spike. Pigs are decent enough. Tigers... meh. Monkeys I have no thoughts about. Bears... ugh.

4th tier: Alligators haunt me in my dreams. Hamsters are creepy. Koalas have some scary faces. Chickens are just weird-looking in general. Cows are creepy and have weird head shapes. Squirrels, there's just none I particularly like. Ostriches are just there. Kangaroos.. who is that?

Last tier: All of them = design mistakes.

ok so frogs are obviously the best and way above any other villager species, so they get their own rank. after that i just put them in the order of how many of each species i find cute, more often than not a villager being cute has little to do with their species and more to do with design and colors and such.

if we had an F tier chickens, kangaroos and gorillas would get their own tier of horrible. if i got a kangaroo on my island i would cry

I'm surprised to see how neutral I am about most of them. There are some that I find generally boring and try to avoid, but in comparison to other games featuring animals, species in AC has much less of an impact on my preferences. I'll still fall for anything squid-like, though, and my love for birds and big-nosed-beings is still evident. It mostly seems to boil down to the individual design, as I placed some species low on the list which include some of my favorite villagers, but I'd say I'm slightly biased in favor of those ranking higher.

S: Dogs, Hamsters, Eagles, Ducks, Frogs, Sheep, Tigers.
I like almost all of them in each species and they are animals I like alot in real life too. Hamsters should probably be Infront of Dogs, as there isn't a single hamster I dislike. But, they are all in S rank. To was actually hard for me to separate S and A ranks.
A: Deer, Squirrels, Alligators, Chickens, Horses, Ostriches, Penguins, Wolves, Elephants, Rhinos.
B: Cats, Lions, Bulls, Cows, Anteaters, Rabbits, Gorillas, Bears, Birds, Goats.
Honestly should have Gorillas between Cats and Lions, but eh...
C: Monkeys, Kangaroos, Hippos, Koalas, Pigs.
These are ones where I don't have many favorites in, like in monkeys, I love shari and kangaroos I love Astrid. While others there are only a couple of one I like.
D: Cubs, Octopuses, Mice.
I simply just don't care for the cubs and wish they would remaster them to regular Bears and shuffle personalities to even them out. I think they would look better as Bears. I pretty much only like Maple and Olive but even then, they don't give me much interest. But I may be interested in more of them, if they were remastered to the Bear template.
Octopuses I feel bad for putting them in D rank. Their design is good, I just don't care for what they have so far. Zucker is cute, and I do like him, but it would be nice having someone else in there I like. Why not a bioluminescent one that's blue and has green spots? They could do a triplets and three different personalities (we have enough twins in the franchise) maybe the other is blue with pink spots, or white with multiple different colored spots like orange, blue, pink, and purple? They could do stripes on some that is a darker color of their body color.
Mice, I just don't like them. Not sure how I'd change their models. Maybe my issue is they look too cartoony? Idk, can't put my finger on it.

This was fun! I tried my best to order them within each row, hopefully I got it pretty close. I absolutely looooooove the Horses, Bears, and Cubs. I find them all to be the ones I want to fill in my neighborhoods with when I need a villager. I also am in the minority here, but I really like the Gorillas. Boyd won my heart in NH, and since then I've really come to appreciate them. Pigs, Ducks, and Deer all have cuties who are easy to like and always a joy to see in a town.

B Tier is primarily villagers that I really like the shape of and find a lot of options who are pleasing to look at (the Frogs have so many cool designs!). I wish there were more Ostriches, that's the only reason they are lower on that tier.

C and D Tiers are all middle of the road for me, just ordered as best as I can by which species I like to have in a town. Some I've rarely used, which makes me sad. I also feel like some of them are just the same personalities, which makes it hard to find one that stands out.

The last tier are the species I really prefer not to use. And Octopi are last because there are so few of them and I really don't like any of them lol. I'd really like to see that species fleshed out better. Mice would probably be way higher if their tails didn't stick straight out, it always gives me the creeps lol

 

[Pate and Ketchup]

It's a difficult choice because I have favorite villagers in every specie or almost. For example, I love Pietro but I don't like most of the sheeps so I put this specie in low D. Rocket is my favorite Sisterly but in general I really dislike gorillas.
But in general, most of the squirrels, rabbits and cats are awesome. The other species are too (S tier). Fauna is a cutie, I love Wolfgang for so long (Chief and Fang are good too). Ducks are really cute, especially Pate, Ketchup and Molly (love her name).
Cubs have a cute little head and most of the dogs are nice. Koala is a cool specie (even if I dislike the example given in the tierlist lol) and elephants are cute.
For frogs, I mostly like Lily and Cousteau. Horses, I love some but Julian of course is the best. Unicorn you know.
If I like Drago, I don't like other crocodiles. Mouses, I don't really like them. Ok, Broccolo is super cute, but... I prefer them in real lol.
Merengue is wonderful, best girl but I don't like her specie.

It's superficial but it's just a story of physical appareance, I'm sorry.

Here's the factors I take into consideration regarding which tier they land on:

• Definitely Having - These species contain at least one personal all-time favorite villager, and said villagers would come back in future mainline games. They also contain several other villagers that are heavy favorites of mine as well. Of note, the deer species is my favorite out of all in the series. Nearly all of them are high favorites.
• High Chance of Having - These species may contain an all-time favorite. There are many other villagers I like as well, though there are a few "duds" mixed in.
• Good Chance of Having - These species don't have any personal all-time favorites, though there are still a good selection of villagers I highly like. They'd likely be considered if I wanted a different species other than those listed above.
• Low Chance of Having - There are not many villagers I personally like. That may either be because of how the overall species physically appears or not properly fitting in with a town theme of mine. Would only move in as a last resort or for theme matching.
• Definitely Not Having - I don't like any of these villagers. They have their fans; I get it. It's simply a personal preference of mine that they don't make appearances as residents in my towns.
