Tree growing problem?

I've been wanting to plant some cedar trees in a certain spot, but every time I've tried they haven't gotten past the first stage without wilting the next day:



So I tried that a few times, and always the same. So then I tried doing it with fruit trees, to see if the same thing happened, and they're growing:



So I'm not really sure why the others wouldn't? (Also the pattern was there when they had grown too, I just removed it before I took the picture, so it's not that.)

I'm hoping it's not something incredibly obvious that I've just stupidly missed! Does anyone know why the cedar trees wont grow?

Cedar trees can only grow in the northern part of the town

Where are you planting them? Cedar trees only grow in the top half of your map.

As others have said, cedar trees will only spawn in the northern area of your town. I believe it's 30 tiles below the tracks if I recall correctly.

Wow! I didn't know that either. That's really useful as I'm in the middle of landscaping and planting trees and flowers. Is there another tree that grows exclusively in the lower part of town?? And do we start with any cedars in the lower half?

No and no.

palm trees (banana/coconut) are beach exclusive

that's the only other location specific plant I can think of outside of the usual restrictions

There may also be dead spots in your town where no trees or bush starts will grow, and those can be anywhere.

There's always an exact number. Not sure it it varies from town to town.
