So I just had a bizarre interaction with another user. We were going to trade DIY’s so I opened my gates and sent them a dodo code, then the intruder arrived. The intruder stalled for a second and started running around my island, then the actual trader arrived. The trader had the same username online so I knew it was them but amidst the confusion they dropped the DIYs, the intruder stole one and used it so I immediately closed the session. The trader was the only person I gave the dodo code to and we chatted over discord and resolved the situation, so my question is if they didn’t send someone else the dodo code how could someone come to my island? I thought people could only come via dodo code but the trader said maybe it was someone from my switch friend list? Hopefully this can be a warning for others but we’re both still confused as to how it happened…

Sorry but that trader probably lied to you... If you open via dodo code, then only people who have the dodo code can come in. None of your friends can come in if they don't have the code.. And this is pretty common knowledge so the fact that the trader tried to tell you that other people can come in from your friends list is just highly suspect. I wouldn't trade with them again. But it's also weird cuz I don't see the motive.. If it was their friend, they could have just picked up the recipe and then given it to their friend themself..

ugh sadly the trader probably lied to you/ may have tried to scam you- they must have shared the code bc no one else can get the code. it can also be someone randomly spamming/testing dodo codes but i think the former is more likely. 😭 😭
did they explain why or?

It's incredibly likely they gave the Dodo code to someone else. Dodo codes are only five characters long, so it's possible that someone just happened upon your town. However, this is still very unlikely; I wouldn't trade with that person in the future.

Can confirm with what the others are saying. When you open via Dodo Code, your friends cannot simply access your island without the code. Had someone over at some point via Dodo code and my brother needed to come over, but he couldn’t find my island by searching for friends. Either they got extremely lucky trying random codes which is extremely unlikely, or the trader gave the code to someone else, which is more likely.

That's where I'm stuck, after talking to them they seemed just as confused and they'd really be going out of their way to pull off a 4nmt heist... thankfully I didn't lose anything but best case scenario this is a hiccup on Nintendo's part.

Only other time I have heard this happening was because they publicly posted the dodo code. I was going to say don’t publicly post it because anyone can see it. In this case you say you private messaged the person then it happen. Unfortunately you’ll be surprised what people would do. It just sounds fishy and don’t think it was Nintendo hiccup. At least nothing major was lost.

Scams are starting to become more frequent, so I wouldn't be surprised if the person you gave the Dodo Code is just acting confused on purpose to mislead you. There's no way someone just guessed a 5-digit/letter code so quickly after you opened your gate.

Maybe they thought if they dropped the DIY and their friend picked it up, you either might not notice, or would notice but not blame them and drop your payment anyways; essentially paying them to give their friend a DIY. It seems like it could be kids causing a little trouble for fun. Like maybe the end goal wasn't the 4nmt loot, but the thrill of tricking some random person online. Because you and the user you quoted are right, otherwise it doesn't make that much sense, does it? The whole thing just sounds weird and stupid.

I don't know, I'm glad you didn't lose anything of value and if it was a case of someone messing with you, then I'm sorry it happened. Here's hoping your next trade is less pointlessly irritating.

This happened to me on twitter when I was giving someone a free diy they wanted. Stupid me thought it was a good idea to put my dodo code in such a public place and people started coming by the numbers. Luckily the only stealable thing at the time was the stuff I would give away to visitors haha

I was that trader. And I'm honest, I believe puppyish is honest as well.

So here is what happened:

When I arrived puppyish town, I saw there are 2 people standing near the entrance. So I thought they were trading. And I have no idea who is the owner.
So I just left 2 DIYs on the ground. And one of them picked up and learned the DIY, the other one took the DIY in the bag, and then I got kicked out... And I didn't get the NMT... (later we traded again and I got NMT)

People who traded with me before knew that I'm always the person who drop items first, then take the payment. And never had anything wrong with any trades.
I don't have motive to scam anyone, if the buyer hasn't received what they ordered, they won't pay, and I will lost the DIY and NMT.
I'm a honest trader as always.

PS: The only 2 things I could think of is:
1. Someone else has a very similar Dodo code, and that person typed a wrong key.
2. Since the dodo code is random, and there are many people having different online groups, if they post their current dodo code in the group(for example: buying or selling items or turnips), and some people maybe didn't check when he posted. After they close the gate, then the dodo code is available to use in the system again. And puppyish got that dodo code, that time someone from past who saw the post might try to enter the code, and arrived puppyish's town.

PS2: If I'm the one to post this thread first, then you guys might saying the other buyer is a lier, cause he might give the dodo code to someone and come to his town and take the DIYs I dropped, then kick me out without paying..
I know I'm innocent, and I trust puppyish is honest. Puppyish told me is going to make this post, and I agreed, cause I really want to know who stole that DIY. We just want to know what happened, if there is any glitch caused that.

I just found the Nintendo support website, going to make a report, and wish won't happen again.

(Sorry for my poor grammar, hope you guys understand what I said. Trying to improve lol..)

Did you post the dodo code publicly or use the same dodo code for another transaction before?

for example when I do multiple trades I sometimes just leave the gates open and give the same code to another person after the first one leaves my town.

That's absolutely true. For what it's worth, now that you've posted your side from your own account, I don't think you sound like you were trying to scam. It would be pretty foolish for someone to risk an account in good standing that they've used for years to steal what basically amounts to pocket change. So I'm sorry, I'm not proud of myself for sharing such uncharitable assumptions based on one half of a story.

Who knows what happened with your trade, but I'm glad that it sounds like it turned out alright for you and puppyish in the end. Even if it left you both feeling confused.

Maybe his TBT account got hacked and the intruder got the dodo account that way? But you probably would notice that, since when you get hacked you can`t log in the forum yourself. Other then that, I don`t know. The lying seems most likely, then again, I don`t understand why the invited trader would act all surprised, unless in some weird way thats how he gets his enjoyment out of it.

It seems that the intruder just happened to get a random or maybe expired Dodo code and landed on your island? Maybe he wasn’t even sure what he was doing/thought that the DIY was meant for general use..
it seems really weird because he did not gain much except for one DIY and didn’t take anything else from the island before that..

If you get a code wrong, the Dodo guy exits the whole conversation, so you have to start from scratch. Guessing a Dodo code would be extremely tedious
