I've been struggling for a while to catch both a scorpion and a tarantula. I've seen them both but they either run away and jump off the cliff/into the river or they attack me!
Are there any tricks to get them to spawn quicker and also any tips on how to catch them easily?
When you save your game and continue, that resets the spawns in your town. So if you don't see a tarantula or a scorpion, you can try that to try getting them spawned. Make sure that as you're looking for them, you do NOT have your net out. As soon as they see you moving with a net, they will attack you. Once you see them, begin to creep up on them. They will spot you and turn around. As soon as they do, just stand still. They will turn back around. Even if you have your net equipped at this point, just stand still and you'll be fine. Then once they're not looking at you again, start creeping up on them again. Keep doing this until you're close enough to swing your net. Make sure you are though, because if you miss, they will insta-attack you. xD

Do you know if they spawn only on top of grass? A lot of my town is covered with flowers and some paths so I'm wondering if I should just look on the free grassy areas?
Do not walk around with your net but make sure it is the item you are ready to pull out. Keep your finger on the 'a' button while walking around. When you spot the tarantula, keep your finger on the 'a' button but stop and pull out your net to capture it. The tarantula will only attack if you miss or start running.
Best way to find em is to stop looking. :-/ Sad but true. They're so much harder to find when you're looking! I usually find tarantulas when I'm just wandering around town, doing rounds and looking for villagers. Make sure you have some areas with no paths or flowers though, because they only spawn on open grass areas.
