Sooooooo I stopped playing for a good two months. Turned it on today, half-expecting at least one villager to have departed. Nope, everyone I had before is still here.

Are there any factors that keep villagers from moving out during extended downtime, or am I just lucky here? I could probably google this but EFFORT :p

Yes, mightymunchlax is right. You can stop playing for as long as you like, when you stop playing on a day that you stopped a villager from moving.

I have 5 copies and can't possibly play them all everyday. I have never had a surprise move out. I make sure that a villager runs up to me and says they're thinking of leaving. I tell them to stay, then I don't play that copy for a couple of weeks.

Makes sense to me, considering I recall doing just that before I put the game down. Thanks for clearing that up.

You can be absent from your save file for years and no one will move. Just be sure to talk to everyone daily to ensure no one will move out after being gone for so long.
