Thoughts on popular villagers?

All I wanted was to hear people's opinions, I didn't think my second thread on TBT would turn into this. I'm sorry.

it's not quite anything to be sorry about; it's more of not knowing peoples' reactions to these. which is, obviously negative. it's because i've seen countless threads go down in flames due to this very reason -- opinions. some do not know how to share nicely. i dont have much energy right now, but i'll entertain you and see if i get bitten for my respectful opinion.

i believe marshal is horrendously overrated. i sorta have to roll my eyes with the millions of threads i see for him. usually i don't abhor popular things, and it's generally not just because they're popular because that would be silly.
when i first saw him, i had to do like... a triple take in order to understand what was going on. i dont remember where it was, or what the context was... but i just remember coming here a while ago and seeing a thread with him in it. it was immediately swarmed and i honestly thought they'd put the wrong picture in. it was just some weird looking squirrel to me, who was really plain and rather boring. so i didnt really understand the tiers at that time, nor did i understand the popularity that was marshal.
in my honest and humble opinion, all traces of irritation for marshal for me would be erased if he was switched to a cranky. his smug personality, to me, doesn't fit in the least, and i've visited him a few times to check him out and make sure. i can't stand him as a smug. some people like him that way and that's totally fine. it isn't bad that people like him. but i personally just do not see the appeal. as i said, i thought they'd put up the wrong picture because he was beyond bland to me.
all in all, i dislike marshal greatly, but what does that mean? it means i wont have him in my towns as a dreamie. it means i would give him away should i get him. it means i would give him to someone who would LOVE him. it means the countless threads might annoy me, but they're not hurting me, so who cares?

why did i pick marshal as my first example? well, he fills that first slot, for one, but for another, im testing the waters. i gave my opinion, since you desired it, and i will see where it lands me.

I once gave my opinion about a top tier and regretted it soon after, promising myself I wouldn't do it again, but now that I think about it, there shouldn't be anything stopping me from speaking my mind in a respectful and civil manner without getting hateful comments in return. I think that if we all gave and added our thoughts instead of bashing others for theirs, then we wouldn't run into these sensitive issues anymore.

which is why i try to stress that it's simply my dumb opinion that shouldn't matter to anyone else but me. the age range on this board makes it a little difficult, i've found.
again, i dont hate things because theyre popular -- i almost always have actual reasons behind it. the popularity can CONTRIBUTE to annoyance, but isn't the cause. (also i thought 50m was his general going-for price maybe im outdated haha)
since most have abandoned this thread, i dont see anyone trying to bite me for what i said. ;p besides, what's there to get upset about? i tried to use my energy to explain it in a calm, non-accusatory manner. but someone might find a bone to pick with me if they care to look. (not that i actually wish for that to happen, im just saying theres a chance of it)

don't be afraid of expressing opinions. the reason i shut these threads out instead of giving my opinions is because how i've seen them go. theyre not always like that, though, i think one scraped by recently, just barely, with an okayish discussion. and yes, you're completely right about that last bit, but sadly that's wishful thinking. there are always going to be abrasive people x)

anyway, i stated mine and this thread probably wont be touched much more from what i can see. at least OP got two casual opinions ;p

The only thing that bothers me about villager popularity is when other people dump on someone because "You're only jumping on the bandwagon. You don't really like <villager name>." How in the world do you know? Super mind reading powers?

It's all about personal preference and yes I can see someone liking a villager because of all they hype they get. But it's rediculous to be a jerkface about it. I personally don't care when or how or why a villager is someone's favorite or made popular. Just don't go starting drama over it.

I like them. I think they`re all cute and well designed. Many of them are mascot material haha.


Tastes change, though. For instance, Beau never flipped the like switch for me. People are pretty crazy over the deers I`ve noticed, and they are modeled pretty well so I don`t blame them! All of the top tiers have caught my eye prior to me seeing the listings, but Beau is like...the exception.

However, it`s my opinion versus an entire communities`. I think its silly that people (not just with villagers, but with media, viral events, etc) whine about it and want others can change for their opinion simply because they`re adamant about it. I like tiers, they`re well done and keep the plaza organized.

Popular villagers appeal to many people. That's why things are popular. But that doesn't mean they appeal to everybody. There have been plenty of villagers that, after getting to know them, I'm like, "Oh, now I understand why you're popular!" But there are still plenty where I've been disappointed that they didn't appeal to me so much. But I wouldn't expect the same reaction out of everyone. Everyone's different. And every villager is different. That's why there's more than 300 of them. Because everyone is different, and they want to try and make villagers that appeal to everyone. And even still, it's not enough! We've got 300+ different, awesome villagers, and billions and billions of different, awesome people.

I see more people talking about fights going down in the forums over villager preference than I actually see said fights, so I don't know if I just miss them or if people are making a bigger deal out of them than needed, but I see little reason to have these discussions at all most times. You either like a villager for their personality or appearance or you don't, and that's that. Popular villagers are usually the most 'aesthetically' appealing to a broad audience. That isn't to say they are exclusive, there are exceptions of course, but that's really all there is to it.

i think the tiers are really nice for the plaza and sean works so so hard on it. it can just be taken too seriously sometimes.

I haven't been on TBT long, only my second day and all. I was referring to other sites. I've seen a lot of viciousness over villagers. Unfortunately I've seen the AC community on another site get absolutely evil to each other over every it ty bitty thing. It's one reason I've been ignoring my ACNL blog, I got tired of seeing all the negativity on my dash. I dunno about every fandom, but I do know my main blog doesn't see that much hate on its dash and I'm following some pretty intense fandoms. I dunno if it's an Animal Crossing thing or just a video game thing, since AC is pretty much the only game I follow the fandom of.

My side town Valley has Marshal in it. He was a move in shortly after starting the town. I like Marshal but he is overrated. To be honest I find it silly to spend 50 Million bells on any villager. I also don't like when people fight over pixels. Fauna was one of my starters in Valley. I've adored her since that day. Do I think she's overrated, no. I can see why she is popular. Out of all the deer she is my favorite.
If you dislike Fauna thats cool with me because everyone has different tastes.

I don't have an opinion on most of the top tiers, I haven't had them in my town yet. Thats how I play AC though. I just let villagers move in and then decide if I like them or not. I wasn't pleased to see Cobb moving in at first. Now he makes me laugh because of his house and mad doctor design. Seems fitting for a town named Zombie. Is he a keeper? No, I'll let him move when he wants to.

i like them. especially when they've got this much controversy surrounding them because the worse it is the better the amount of bells you get haha ok jk

well yeah it's easy to tell why people like them. food is like a huge turn in for ANYONE really, cute smug villagers pretty much equate to cute boys flirting with you instead of the other atrocities we have in this game that look way too old to be allowed to hit on underdeveloped little girls, and villagers with cute colors that complement each other. things like fang and molly also look like real life breeds of animals instead of something made up, so there's that.

i don't get why it's so hard to see but then again i'm kind of notable for being able to notice that kind of stuff so?? i don't see the reason why people DON'T get why they're popular. it's frustrating.

IMMA DO A FULL TIER 1 REVIEW HERE I GO

1. Marshal- hes cute! I definitely see why people like him, but I don't see why people like him so damn much. hes an ex-dreamie of mine, and he was only ever a dreamie bc I didnt like any of the other smugs at the time. I dont think hes worth 50m bells, but hey, I guess if someone has the bells, go ahead.
2. Merengue- tbh I dont like her very much, but I see why shes so popular. her face is weird to me for some reason, idk.
3. Lolly- her face is also weird to me. I like the :3 face, but imo her eyes are too high up for her to pull it off? I still think shes cute, tho. should be a peppy haha
4. Diana- shes very pretty & has a cool house. I just dont like the doe model all that much. the snout looks off to me.
5. Ankha- I actually quite like ankha, and I considered having her as a dreamie once. Im not too fond of her eyes, though, but thats a minor complaint.
6. Julian- julian is cute, I suppose. I like his color scheme. a little weird how his eyes are nearly constantly closed, though. I see why hes popular- hes a damn unicorn. I bet you hed be lower on the list if he didnt have that horn.
7. Zucker- I love zucker, hes actually a dreamie of mine! I wanted him before the game came out in america, ever since I saw his picture. Hes so cute,I love when his eyes get sparkly. even tho his design basis is a bit morbid lmao
8. Stitches- hes okay. I think hes a bit creepy, but hes one of the more uniquely designed villagers, which is why hes so popular.
9. Rosie- I also think her face is weird. all cats with the :3 face in this game just look weird to me.
10. Beau- hes okay. I dont like his eyes all that much. my friend has him, and hes cute in game. also hes sorta pretty lol
11. Fauna- shes cute, but her eyes weird me out a little like skye's eyes do. also, once again, the doe model isnt my favorite.
12. Tia- I love her design basis and I think shes really cute. never considered her for a dreamie, though.
13. Marina- I had her in WW, and octavian shortly after (though I hated octavian.) I worked so hard to get her pic omfg. she was my 2nd bff in ww after wolfgang so shes cool w/ me.
14. Bam- his freckles are cute, and hes colorful. not a big fan of jocks, but yea
15. Fang- I had him & hes great! hes an ex-dreamie, but I decided he might be too much like wolfgang so I gave him to my friend. Hes pretty. was my temp boyfie lmao

so yeah main consensus: I see why they're popular, but I dont like most of them as much as many others do.

While some of them are not my personal faves, I can totally understand why they're popular. I don't think there's anyone in the top tier that I don't get why they're there.
