One of the things that bugs me is when you buy from second hand stores or EBay, you can always find carts with great save data. One of the things that ticks me off is when people delete their saves. It?s like seriously, your save could?ve been one of the greatest towns! Why not pass that on to whoever buys your game?

My guess is that most people prefer to not giving their save files to other people and rather delete them
because of personal reasons. Even if they may have a wonderful looking town, they maybe won't want to
have another person playing it and using their data.

Alternative, they just delete it because they think the next person who gets the game would probably
delete it anyway and start a new file. So because of this, they just do the job by deleting it already
before selling it.

Back then, I actually got a used NL, which had a town on it, however, it was pretty much abandoned
and not so worth it to keep. At the end, I got a whole bunch of bells from Nook when I sold the town
to him.

I am torn. if I were ever to sell my copies of ACNL, I would want to delete because I wouldn't want anyone taking credit for the towns I built. But also, I would want them to be able to sell the town to Tom Nook because I know how much grinding for bells and items and PWPs sucks. :(

Oooh this is a bit of a personal preference scenario really. I wouldn't want people taking credit for my town that I spent hours building or my character etc. But at the same time I'd think the bells and items etc are fair game for the next person. Though my game is digital and not cartridge.

I bought a second copy (which I haven't played in years) that had the old users town on and I still ended up deleting it (before we were able to sell the town to Tom Nook etc) because I wanted a fresh start anyway
I won't lie I did check to see if they had any unique/rare or collectible items that I could transfer to my first town beforehand

In the sense of telling people what to do and not do when they sell their game - it's really up to the person selling.

You do have a good point. There might be a way to permanently mark your ownership

I think it's nice to see what people before you did on their game!
And let's absolutely not forget that with the Welcome Amiibo update you can sell your town! Another reason to not delete your game!
Everyone may not want to sell the town, some people want to start fresh, but for the ones who like starting with bells, it's a great thing to have!

I got a secondhand NL cartridge back in 2016, and it had literally all of my dreamies. Pietro, Mallary, uhh... I forget the others but yeah! But I reset it because I wanted my own town ;o;

all around me are familiar faces

me? if i was to sell a town? transfer all money from old town to my own town using someone else help

Well see I'm so scared that a card I pick up is going to be corrupted or hacked which will then ruin my no hacks system. I'd prob do an entire wipe on the game without actually opening it to look around the town. So I always buy my copies new, for a dollar or 2 extra I think it's worth it. While looking around the old town would be cool, I'm too scared to risk it.

For my own part, if I were ever to sell any of my cartridges someday, I would delete the saves beforehand. Not for any concerns over the next owner taking credit as others laid out in their posts, I don't care about that. Rather, because if I personally were to buy a used cartridge I'd delete it anyway to make my own town. You could sell your town to Tom Nook and make a new town for the next owner, but then they'd be stuck with whatever town name you chose. I know I would rather come up with my own town name, get a map to my own specifications, and so on and so forth.

This is all coming from the assumption that whoever the next owner would be would be a new player who wouldn't necessarily have another 3DS or a friend who could help haul over your old bells and items and whatnot before they deleted your save. In such a case, the stuff's probably going to go to waste anyway.

I can see why some people would want the old saves so that the items, bells, villagers, QR codes, and so on could be harvested for future use if so desired. Heck, I'd probably do the same thing since I have more than one 3DS and it would be a simple matter to move things around. But at least for me, deleting seems optimal and a bit more courteous. Kind of like the old adage back in the era of VHS tapes and video stores, "Be Kind, Rewind."

Finally, if a new player was just starting out and they had millions of bells right at the start, it seems like it would cause burnout faster because it makes everything a bit too easy starting out. Everyone's mileage will vary with that, just speaking from my own perspective.

I feel like this is more of a personal choice. If you're chill will having people take your stuff, dont delete anything. If you'd rather die than have someone take credit for your town, DELETE. If you feel bad for them earning bells, sell your town for them.
