recently i've become really interested in tarantulas and i plan to buy one soon! (a caribena versicolor, they're beautiful)
i used to and still am scared of regular house spiders but theres something about tarantulas that aren't as scary? i've seen lots of people who prefer tarantulas over house spiders and it sounds super weird to say that you find a venomous spider less scary than a harmful house spider lol.
I think what freaks me out about small regular house spiders is that they are small. They get lost. And a missing spider is wayyyy scarier than a spider you can see, so I prefer a large spider that you can keep your eyes on, like a tarantula. Lol XD Also, the big fuzzy types are super cute actually. Not sure if I'd hold one, but I'd be more likely to if a bug specialist held one out to me and told me it was safe. Now those tiny teeny weeny jumping spiders are THE WORST T_T .
There is definitely a difference between the two. I'm terrified of regular spiders, but I've a tarantula tattooed on me. Naturally people ask, "why do you have a tarantula tattoo if you're scared of spiders?" They're not the same at all! I'd consider keeping a tarantula as a pet.
Neither. I actually love all spiders. They are one of my favorite animals. I will pick up and handle most house spiders (I know the venemous ones in my area so no worries there). I think tarantulas are super cute but unfortunately I could never own one because I couldn't bear to feed it, same with snakes, lizards, and the like. Otherwise, I'm sure they'd be great pets.
I'm not really scared of either, now roaches on the other hand... *ugh*
I think lot of people are scared of spiders because they are fast moving and have a fear they might bite you. But any animal can be, most will flee at the sight of you, contrary to what some popular video games lead you to believe. A tarantula may seem big to you but you are 100X bigger than them.
In reality, owning a tarantula is like owning a pet rock. They don't move much at all, they even recommend you keep them in smaller tanks as giving them too much space could stress them out. Once they get used to you, they are quite docile, the one's I've handled felt like a course bristle brush.
Yeah some species are venomous but most are comparable to a bee sting. What I worry about is their hairs falling off and causing irritation. I've heard some people become allergic to it. :/
You also will have to keep live for it as well (crickets, roaches, mealworms, ect) so its like having another responsibility to keep the food alive. I'd love to own one but right now I live my parents and I don't think my mom would appreciate a huge spider living near her room, lol.
i live in the northeast so the only tarantulas i’ve encountered were pets/museum animals. because of that, they’re pretty docile and usually not dangerous at all. but a random spider i find in my home/outside are much more unpredictable. so i’d be more concerned over a wild spider than a tarantula i know has lived in captivity
if i saw a tarantula in a wild though... that’d be a different story
I don't really mind regular house spiders and I don't find spiders that scary in general... but I absolutely hate banana spiders, which were very common in my area where I grew up. I think tarantulas are really cute and I took care of a few of them for a friend when she needed pet-sitting.
I love tarantulas!! And I like small spiders.
Even though it is not possible I would love to own a tarantula! I also think they can have a little own personality, like horses and cats can also have. I am not sure about this though
I'm not scared of either and I think both are really cute! I've been trying to convince my parents to let me get a pet tarantula for years now, and I always keep house spiders around because they take care of the more intrusive insects (i.e. mosquitoes, moths, roaches). We actually may need more in the house or at least in my room haha
I also enjoy pausing to admire spiders and their webs when I'm outside, we have crab spiders here and I think they look absolutely gorgeous.
I don’t live in Australia so if I saw a tarantula in the United States I would be ****ting my pants way more than if a normal spider just was vibin on my desk
