We were all newbies at Animal Crossing: New Horizons once. Some of us arguably still are. Not too long ago, when NH first came out, everyone who first got the game on the release date was collectively a big group of newbies when it came to all the new features.
We were also all newbies at Animal Crossing in general once. And for some of us, New Horizons was even our first exposure to the series.
When I was new to New Horizons:
I think it took me about one day to really figure out Shep was a sheepdog... not an actual sheep. I was aware of the sheep villagers in Animal Crossing though, which makes this even dumber on my behalf. I just never asked myself what animal Shep was supposed to be, I guess. When I finally did, it became more than obvious he was a dog. My subconscious just assumed it was some sort of alternate/sheared sheep model and moved on... How stupid of me.
The first time I saw Erik was on a Nook Miles Island on top of a cliff, and it was dark... “Wow! A jackalope!” I was about to tell my friend the exciting news, that I found a possibly new jackalope villager I assumed would be highly sought-after. Turns out he was just a regular deer named Erik. I did end up liking him, however. Too bad I had him move out before I discovered how I could get a poster of him from using Harv’s Island...
I thought Mystery Island Tours were the most exciting thing ever. I thought every island was actually supposed to truly be different, and was wondering why I seemed to be getting the same boring seemingly pre-determined layouts over and over. I just thought I was really unlucky, lol.
Since the fish-bait clam is called a Manila clam, I thought there would be other species of clams you could dig up or find as well that would have different purposes.
Speaking of Manila clams, at first I didn’t get the pun, “Manila is my favorite flavor of clam.” It is a pun on vanilla, and not just your character pointlessly stating that Manila clams are their favorite kind of clams.
When I was New to Animal Crossing in general:
My first Animal Crossing title was the GameCube game. I first got the game for my birthday, which is in the winter. I was playing as a girl character with the pointy hat, and there was snow on the ground. So I thought the game took place in the North Pole and you were supposed to be a little elf. (Listen, I wasn’t a bright 8-year-old.)
It took me into New Leaf to figure out that you had to only press A once when catching a fish. I thought you had to repeatedly mash the button, or it would get away.
