We were all newbies at Animal Crossing: New Horizons once. Some of us arguably still are. Not too long ago, when NH first came out, everyone who first got the game on the release date was collectively a big group of newbies when it came to all the new features.

We were also all newbies at Animal Crossing in general once. And for some of us, New Horizons was even our first exposure to the series.

When I was new to New Horizons:

I think it took me about one day to really figure out Shep was a sheepdog... not an actual sheep. I was aware of the sheep villagers in Animal Crossing though, which makes this even dumber on my behalf. I just never asked myself what animal Shep was supposed to be, I guess. When I finally did, it became more than obvious he was a dog. My subconscious just assumed it was some sort of alternate/sheared sheep model and moved on... How stupid of me.

The first time I saw Erik was on a Nook Miles Island on top of a cliff, and it was dark... “Wow! A jackalope!” I was about to tell my friend the exciting news, that I found a possibly new jackalope villager I assumed would be highly sought-after. Turns out he was just a regular deer named Erik. I did end up liking him, however. Too bad I had him move out before I discovered how I could get a poster of him from using Harv’s Island...

I thought Mystery Island Tours were the most exciting thing ever. I thought every island was actually supposed to truly be different, and was wondering why I seemed to be getting the same boring seemingly pre-determined layouts over and over. I just thought I was really unlucky, lol.

Since the fish-bait clam is called a Manila clam, I thought there would be other species of clams you could dig up or find as well that would have different purposes.

Speaking of Manila clams, at first I didn’t get the pun, “Manila is my favorite flavor of clam.” It is a pun on vanilla, and not just your character pointlessly stating that Manila clams are their favorite kind of clams.

When I was New to Animal Crossing in general:

My first Animal Crossing title was the GameCube game. I first got the game for my birthday, which is in the winter. I was playing as a girl character with the pointy hat, and there was snow on the ground. So I thought the game took place in the North Pole and you were supposed to be a little elf. (Listen, I wasn’t a bright 8-year-old.)

It took me into New Leaf to figure out that you had to only press A once when catching a fish. I thought you had to repeatedly mash the button, or it would get away.

found raymond on an island and left bc i was looking for a diff villager
Me but with Judy instead haha

My newbie NH mistake was destroying all my rocks on the first or second day. I didn't have any rocks to hit for the few days or week of the game because they moved to other parts of the island I couldn't access yet D:

at first I didn't know what the little tags were that you got from collecting nook mile achievements
eventually went to change my title and was like "ohhhh!!!"

i didn't know you choose the first 3 villager plots u put down from islands, so i just put em all down & had random villagers move in. ;-;

Idk if this counts as a newbie thing or me just being clumsy, but everytime I'm trying to grab something (present, tree branch, etc) between some flowers, I always pick off the top of the flower-

My reallllll newbie moments in New Leaf definitely had to be running on the grass (grass deterioration) as well as flowers (they don't grow back like NH) lol

edit: I would also run on my friends flowers- 🤡

I accidentally left Sherb on a NMT because I wasn't interested in a goat villager and had no idea who he was, regretted my choice a few days later when I found out he was popular!

Mine is probably breaking rocks xD I thought that iron nuggets were like the most rare thing in the game because of this.

I thought that the axe was automatically better than the stone axe, so I would hit trees only two times to get wood and accidentally chop them down frequently lol.

When I first started on my island, I remember thinking you could only get one branch from a tree. I'd run up to all my different trees, shake them once and go to the next one.
I then let me boyfriend play on his own switch to make an island. He goes up to one tree and just keeps shaking it. Here I was, struggling to find enough branches and he had a bunch. Once I played again I was set with all the branches I needed!

I kept breaking my rocks and was mad at myself because I needed Iron nuggets afterwards and I found out they only respawn once a day. 🙃

I was stupid enough to use a few iron nuggets in a diy without knowing I needed 30 for the Nooks Cranny, but I managed to recover it in a day from NMT islands.

i've played animal crossing since wild world, so i'm pretty familiar with the core gameplay aspects butttt i didn't realize the first 3 villagers that came to my island in NH had the basic/starter houses until after! had i known that, i would've been less picky about who i wanted since it wouldn't have mattered anyways since i'd move them out lol

I did this too! After hearing that eating fruits gave you "more energy" I was constantly eating all my fruit and wondering why it was taking forever to get to 30 iron nuggets 😩

When I was younger I thought Stitches was a girl and felt betrayed when I realized he was a boy.
Not sure why I felt that way. Anyways, we're cool now. Otherwise, I can't think of any newbie things off of the top of my head.

I thought grown bamboo spawned bamboo shoots infinitely like they did in New Leaf. When I realized that each Bamboo spawns only one shoot now, I regretted the time when I ate a few of them the first time I was on bamboo island to bust the rocks open.
