Special flowers - Roses

What are you opinions on special flowers? I just organized some plots of roses to get some blue and black roses. Any advice for a flower newbie? Is there a special way to plant the flowers that gets better results? I've read that diagonal may work better than planting them side by side. Has anyone got any golden roses?

If you plant flowers like this:

It's more effective, in my experience.
Fertilizer in the middle is good, too, if you can obtain some. I only have a couple golden roses, since you can only get them by wilting, and I have beautiful town ordinance

Special Flowers? As in hybrid flowers?

You do know that to get blue roses, you need to get a special hybrid red rose which is a flower that is obtained from an orange and white rose, orange and purple rose or red and purple rose. Then you can either use two of these hybrid red roses or an orange and a hybrid red rose.

I would also suggest planting diagonally, I've just found I have more luck that way. But blue roses have been a massive pain for me. as dealz says, you need to first breed a special red rose, which you may know about already, and then try for a blue rose. I ended up buying blue roses in the end and breeding from those but if you do want to give it a go yourself, your best bet is planting them on the beach since the villagers won't plant anything there. It took me forever to get a blue rose, even using fertilizer every day. It is easier to trade for two of them and use them to breed. I have a lot of roses in my town if you would like any. I tend to plant a box of flowers and bury a fertilizer in the middle of the box if I am trying for hybrids. I had to give some black roses to a friend to wilt since I was using the beautiful ordinance.

If you get tired of trying to breed some hybrids on your own, then you can always buy some from the Re-Tail sub-forum and breed from there.

I followed the youtube video called The Forbidden Blue Rose.
Planted the orange/purple roses like the video and moved any maybe special roses that grew in the empty spots.
Placed them in a different spot. I call the maybe special hybrid roses because you don't know if the game or a villager planted them.

Used the beach to keep the hybrids safe. The villagers will go down there and plant flowers. Check at end of gameplay and remove any flowers they may have planted

I also use pathway tiles for each type of hybrids.

Just water one type of flower to get the hybrids. Put beautiful on so the rest don't die.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip with the video. I've managed to grow a bunch of orange and purple roses but no blue roses!
