Should I upgrade my house?

Without spoiling why or what, does upgrading my home progress the development of the town or unlock certain features outside of the home?

I’m not TTing, so I want to unlock everything naturally, but I want to make it timely.

Go for it! It doesn't progress development per say, but it's definitely worth it.

One of the primary reasons for upgrading is storage space.

If you like to craft, then you would naturally find yourself hoarding resources.
If you like to dress up, then you'd want a very large closet space.
If you like collecting furniture, KK Songs, Villager Posters, etc... you'd definitely want storage.
