I'm in marching band and the show is Lord of the Rings. I never saw the film or read the books. Should I check it out?

No. It really depends if you're into that kind of stuff but I had to watch the first movie in class and I thought it was incredibly boring.

Some people don't like it of course, but there's no reason to not try it out. It's a classic fantasy story. (Note it probably seems cheesy now, because LotR is where all that cliche 'Dark Lord' and 'evil orcs' stuff came from in the first place. There's some thought behind it though, so it isn't just "random evil guy does evil stuff to take over the world, blah blah." There are reasons and explanations and histories behind just about everything if you dig a little deeper. The movie does a pretty okay job of condensing it all though)

If you read the books prepare for a looot of geographical description and history and names that refer to some obscure part of Middle-Earth's lore. If you can get through it all, you'll have a deeper understanding of Tolkien's work and why people love it.

Or you could just enjoy it as simply a fantasy story, in which case I'd also particularly recommend The Hobbit, which is LotR's predecessor and much simpler yet still enjoyable.

Really it all depends on whether you like high fantasy or not.
If you think you can sit through 11 hours and 30 minutes of movie (that's the running time with the director's cut which is what you should watch if you choose to watch it)

or, if you read it instead, if you can get through a book that's 1000+ pages long.

Personally I love LOTR.

In all seriousness though, Mariah said it best: Lord of the Rings isn't for everyone. I would definitely check them out if you get a chance though and don't be too deterred if fellowship is a bit slow to begin with. There aren't too many better ways to describe it than Wyndfyre already has - it's just something you have to discover for yourself.

If you want to read the books, start with The Hobbit.

Personally The Hobbit is one of my favorite books ever. I've been wanting to read it again for like the third time or fourth time recently. And thanks for accidentally reminding me that for some reason I still haven't finished that last chapter or two of Return of the King...

Is the music you're playing in marching band from the Lord of the Rings score, or is it a series of pieces by Johan De Meij?

Anyways, nah, you don't need to read them. They're really not that great imo.

The movie score

Ahh, well that's cool! Let us know how you like the music! May I ask what instrument you play? :D

At least, if you don't decide to watch/read the series, listen to the score

mostly because it's excellent but also to get a grasp of what you need to be playing (i had to also play it :D )

YES

tbh lotr is great. theyre my favorite movies
ive only read the first book but i loved it and will read the other ones when i have time

The score on LOTR is absolutely magical, I bet it'll sound beautiful when you guys play it!
It is an amazing series in my opinion, but obviously, it isn't for everyone but I think you should definitely give it a chance if you ever have a lazy day off, just watch all of the films c:

If you do watch them, i hope you enjoy them!

Only if you think you'd like it. As others have said, it's high fantasy, so it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I read The Hobbit in seventh grade, but I had a difficult time getting through the LOTR series and have up halfway through the first book. If reading's not your thing, just watch the movies instead.

I'm going to tell you what my husband told me when I asked him if he thought I should read The Hobbit: Tolkien was actually a terrible writer. The books drag on for forever and a freaking day, and it's really unnecessary. But his ideas and the world he came up with is amazing.

Although you may not like it (in which case, you know, you should never just think about talking to me and should lower your eyes whenever you see my username somewhere), you definitely should watch the movies, who are masterpieces and very well-known movies, just for your general knowledge's sake.

Not only am I a fan, I'm also student in a film school, so I want to encourage everyone to watch as many movies as possible n_n/

Rarely are sequels better than the first movie imo, but I've found that to hold true for both the LotR series and also the Matrix series. In both I thought the 2nd and 3rd movies were much more entertaining (and in my eyes, better) than the first.

Cool. As a fan of movies I find it shocking I never saw this film.

I personally really enjoyed both the books and the film. The books are long that is true and they do drag on but I really liked that as I felt I got to know the characters more. I would read the hobbit first and see if you get on with the style of writing. If you don't that's fine you can just watch the movies which are amazing, long but amazing. I adore the music and my favourite is the hobbit one, I think it's called concerning hobbits but I'm not one hundred percent sure. In a nutshell I would read the hobbit, see if you like the writing. If you read The Lord of the rings, if not watch the movies. If you do read the books then watch the movies as well to get a feel for the music so you can understand what it's trying to say almost.
