Report: Nintendo Is Slashing Switch 2 Production By A Third After Poor Sales

Nintendo has always been greedy. Just like any company. PR like Reggie, Iwata and Miyamato had a lot of heart and soul behind the business suit. When people talk about the good times, it was when these three were part of it in some capacity. The presidents after Iwata and Doug Bowser (he rarely made a public appearance nor has his successor) are more corporate suit than approachable and charismatic. And that really helped give them that appeal.

There was that whole issue where Nintendo used the coding from Donkey Kong to make Donkey Kong Jr., but they didn't have the rights to the coding since they contracted some other company to make it for them. So they breached that contract and there was a huge legal battle that they finally had to settle out of court in the favor of the other company. So Nintendo has always been greedy and buisness.

But pretty much every company has been. I'm not defending them, just to be clear. There are a lot of things I don't like about Nintendo and many gaming companies, Sony, Microsoft ect. I think as a whole the gaming industry has just gotten worst now that it's become so mainstream. We have dlc, patches before the game is complete, rushed deadlines, crunch, uninspired games without the passion they once had. It's not just a Nintendo thing. It's just easy to find a scapegoat and point fingers at it when it's bigger than one person or company.

I personally don’t agree with, or see the relevancy of, many of the “Nintendo is greedy” arguments especially when Sony is out here with the second price increase since the announcement of Switch 2 😬

Also, previous consoles from Sony, Microsoft, and Nitnendo always had Nintendo as the least expensive one. When GameCube came out it was 200 and PS2 was 300. At least from what I remember it was always that way with each previous and next-gen console.

Definitely. This is what I meant by not really agreeing with the “Nintendo is greedy” arguments. Every corporation wants a profit. We can’t ignore Sony when the soon-to-be $900 PS5 Pro requires a (currently) $80 disc drive if you want to play physical games. Granted, I’m sure the decision is strategic and not made lightly, but if we want to talk about cost and profit, nearly $1,000 for a console is insane.

Another good point! They’ve always been priced competitively for their offerings. Considering how well higher-fidelity games, such as RE9, can run on Switch 2, the price tag isn’t terrible. (Not to say $450 isn’t a lot, of course)

Most issues people have with Nintendo at the moment don't bother me. However, I do think the current Switch 2 game library is underwhelming. I bought a Switch 2 specifically to play Pokopia, otherwise I would have waited until the next AC or mainline Pokémon titles.

I regret buying a Switch 2 on launch day. Nintendo saw the massive success of the Switch 1 and let themselves become too comfortable. The new boost feature for Switch 1 games is nice, but it doesn't justify the $530 I spent on a new console alongside one of the worst Mario Kart games ever made. The selection of new games is underwhelming and nothing I've played has justified getting the console. I found Pokopia dull (although I know I'm in the minority on that one), and Kirby Air Riders, while great, still isn't what I would consider a system seller.

Others have already said the endless mistakes Nintendo over the past 11 years that damaged their reputation. It's incredible how little Nintendo thinks of their user base and ignores any and all criticism. Even former Nintendo employees have said Nintendo intentionally ignores fan feedback, and that shows in the many ways Nintendo approaches their business and their response to the existence of fan works.

In an industry with so little integrity and so much corruption, I am saddened that the developers of the games that made me get into the hobby in the first place have become just as toxic, if not more so than their peers. The worsening AI bubble that caused an increase in hardware prices, studios shutting down constantly, and overly ambitious games being announced and stuck in development for seemingly forever points towards an industry in rapid decline. I fully expect PlayStation console sales to decline because who wants to pay an extra $200 for six year old hardware? I know I don't.

As soon as Nintendo inevitably increases the price of the Switch 2 it'll only get worse. Game releases on the console will be even fewer and people won't want to buy it. Whenever Nintendo releases a Switch 2 OLED or whatever I'm not even going to bother considering it. I barely use my Switch 2 as is and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I truly hope these declining sales will make Nintendo wake up and try to improve their game lineup, hardware prices, and reputation, but with how stubborn they've been I don't see it.

I don’t mind the cost difference between physical and digital games on the Switch 2 as I mainly get digital versions of games that I know that I definitely will like and physical for those I’m iffy on and can resell if I don’t like the game and get something else in return. What I have a problem with is not having enough memory on a micro SD Express card for a game and how much that particular SD card costs right now.
