Remember when villager photos used to be meaningful?

So you don't find getting them meaningful because the dialog is less? Well okay I guess, but I enjoy getting them and I find them to be meaningful..

It sounds like you're personally attacked and dismissing OP's point because YOU enjoy getting them the way you get them.
Maybe it just didn't quite come across because it's all writing, I don't know. I'm not here to argue about things, I've just seen too much people react quite strongly about opinions like they were facts that HAD to be proven wrong lately, so I might be a little bit on edge.

Anyway, my point was, you can enjoy it and find them meaningful the same way OP can find them less meaningful because of the lack of dialogue. It's not mutually exclusive 😉

On another note, it would actually be quite silly to get exclusive dialogue after talking to them 5 times, since if you talk to villagers more than 2/3 times they keep telling you you're talking to them too much... I mean I'm still super bitter about being told off by my villager every day for talking to them 😢 And I still wish we had "meaner" dialogues haha

Side question. Does anyone know if it's possible to get their picture multiple times like (if I'm not mistaken) it was in NL? Or do you just get the one like in WW? Because that really made it feel worthless in NL. I mean yeah that meant you could collect pics of villagers you don't have but that also made it rather inauthentic. I haven't tried to sell my pic of Billy to find out...

Good point, that's another thing I forgot to mention which disappointed me. I think you can, but I'm not 100% sure.

Here's a quote about that out of the friendship mechanics document!
"Can I get multiple photos from a villager?
Probably? There doesn’t seem to be anything that stops you from getting multiple photos. The current theory is that the game keeps track of the last 64 items the villager has given you. You can receive another photo, but only after the photo has cycled out of the list."

So once you get their photo, they have to give you another 63 random items before there's even a chance of getting another photo. Yikes - that will take a long time

Honestly, I picked up the original animal crossing a year ago. All my villagers in the original were outright rude, to the point of it being... hard to really motivate myself to play, or even give a poo about the town or any of them. The only one remotely nice to me was Tangy. Even the NPCs were nasty. Like you do you if you like that but If that gets implimented back I will stop playing new animal crossing entries, because that really soured my playthrough of the original so badly I don't even want to touch it anymore.

I dealt with bullies all my life, I prefer not to have to deal with them in a game that I play to unwind.

This makes sense to me! I think friendship progression could be MUCH more robust without anyone being mean or rude. It’s probably wise for Nintendo not to bring back “chump” and “loser,” but villagers could still take time to warm up.

Maybe Normals start out polite but distant, like a friendly new neighbor, and eventually end up enthusing to you about how much it brightens the day when you drop by. Uchis start out suspicious and end up confiding in you and treating you like a cool teammate. Crankies start pessimistic and reclusive and maybe even a little self-deprecating (“you’ve got better things to do than waste your time with an old guy like me”) and eventually come to treat you like a grandkid, asking you for favors and telling you weird anecdotes. Snooties could be very proper but clearly unsure about your company, then end up being proud of you and generous, even thanking you for helping them warm up to the town and make other friends. Lazies might start kind of detached and then put in a genuine effort over time, from “here’s a shirt of mine that shrank in the wash” to “this shirt seemed like the kind of thing you usually wear, so I picked it up for you.” Peppies could start rambly and self-absorbed and then start to ask more questions about you and remember what you’ve previously told them. Smugs could give you advice over time and show more of their sincere, less performative side. And Jocks could get less braggy and start complimenting you and taking more of an interest in your hobbies.

As it is now, the villagers I’ve had in my town since day 1 developed friendship for a couple weeks, then plateaued. And the dialogues don’t match up. Hazel gives me presents and insists we are best friends, but if I ever talk to her twice in one day, even ten hours apart, she gets all offended that I’m bothering her. I don’t get the sense that I could have a villager for months and be hearing anything new after the first few weeks. It’s a shame, given how great the villager-to-villager interactions are.

I don't agree that we don't see changes when making friends with villagers. I had a lot of generic text from Static at the start and after being friends with him, I unlocked more dialogue where he is more of a goofball. And I still haven't gotten anyone pic except for Mac, what was expected because he is my best friend and the one I talk/gift/everything the most (and he was my first villager). But I never played wild world so I can speak on that matter

i still feel like you have to work hard for villager photos (i've only gotten renee's so far, which is one i didn't even want) but i definitely don't like that they don't acknowledge it anymore.

Erik: Aww thanks for the apple! Here's a Picture of Erik I found lying around.

this isn't some soccer uniform (which I have >7 of because my villagers seem to think it suits me), this is a precious picture of my fav baby boy please say something meaningful about it!

they’re still meaningful to me but i definitely wish the dialogue drew attention to it more rather than presenting it like some shirt they don’t wear anymore ;;

I agree that photos don’t seem as special compared to WW. In NH, the only meaningful photo I’ve received was from Claude. It helps that he’s my favorite villager, but it’s also because his photo was the buried gift from the treasure hunt he had me do. The hunt was a challenge that day since I haven’t dug up any fossils yet and I had to navigate around and climb on the new hills I terraformed. I enjoyed the struggle though. He did have one of the default lazy dialogue for completing treasure hunt, “Cool.. here we go.. the present is..”, but I thought it was fitting.
