Considering that you're the only one in town that has any sense of fashion/ interior design opinion (despite what snooties and Gracie will have you believe), how do you go about redecorating your villager's houses?
Specifically I'm talking about items on tables that you gave your villagers when you were too much of a n00b to realise they were hideous and cannot be bought (that cricket in Marshal's home...).
Of course, villagers always find a way to change their furniture, even when retail is fully stocked with gems/ fruits.
I try to be careful what I give my villagers, especially when they ask me to get them so new furniture for their house because Im always afraid that theyll switch out the wrong item (which usually happens). I just keep giving them items until stuff is in the spot that I want it, but at the same time I like to keep villagers houses somewhat original because it shows their personality
i only "redecorate" a villager's house if they've thrown something in there that just rly looks stupid/outta place. like Coco had replaced one of her gyroids with a 4 ball tee so i bought it from her bc that shirt is uggo and it just did not fit with her house.
anyways usually if a villager asks me to give them furniture i don't bc i forget/dnt care to look for something, but if i hope to replace something in their house i try to keep with their original theme of their house.
My villagers are very stubborn. I used to give them shirts thinking they would wear them. Didn't work. Julian keeps getting rid of the regal furniture I give him. I keep giving Chief clocks for him to have a nice little collection, he gives them back.

I only leave furniture in re-tail that I could see going to a villager... the only way they get weird furniture in their house is from other villagers via me completing errands... and I am usually cool with whatever so long as it isn't weird, I straight up deny when they ask for the odds and ends in my pockets too
I try to go with themes. Like for example, Punchy's house has a few of the blue series items, so if I send him any new furniture I try to pick a few out of those if he doesn't already have them displayed, or anything that may have blue in it that would look nice lol.
I always gave Muffy the rococo items I would get because I felt they suited her personality the best.
hmm just like the people here are saying, I always try to go with the theme like Beau house is basically a outdoor picnic, so I try to give him stuff that looks good with outdoor heheh. and sometimes villagers sell their furniture to Re-Tail, but if whatever they sell looks really good in their houses, I'll buy them and send it back to them xD
Merengue recently put her ice-cream lamp on sale, so I bought it and customized it to strawberry swirl to match her and the room
I do the Re-Tail trick and don't have much of an issue with villagers getting rid of furniture, unless I give them something and they swap it out. That's why I try to be careful about what I give them. If they ask me for fish or bugs, I find some that would look nice (like goldfish) or I say yes but don't do it so it's like I never found it. When they do display stuff that looks bad in their houses, I just send them items that are the same size as what I'm trying to replace and patiently do the mail round thing if I only want them to replace one thing.
In general, when I'm decorating their houses I try to choose something that fits their personality, design, and that just looks like something they'd like. I try to make sure that it all fits together too, even when I'm going for a mismatched look.
I try to not be too obsessed with it and find a nice balance between fulfilling their requests and keeping their houses looking nice.
My villagers home is used to full of clothes...
I feel so piss. I gave Rudy a tons of cool furniture and some others request me to order to him, then he found it a shirt and decided not to wear it but decorated his house with it.
I give my villagers items according to their theme, but I've stopped giving them fossils/insects/fish. They take up lots of room and it doesn't look that good.
all villagers are fashionable in their own way, snooties or not~
but I tried redecorating their houses once but according to their tastes (style and color), so when I want to give a villager something I check this list: http://www.thonky.com/animal-crossing-new-leaf/villager-birthdays/
yeah it's their birthday preferences list but it has all the good stuff you need to know what they like and what not~
I don't like to force them to have things they don't like, even if they're basically a bunch of lifeless pixels XD
